Dutifully reporting our experiences with the new Fastpass return policy. We were there this past week, one day each at MK, HS, and EP. Crowd levels were at high 4's/low 5/s for the first two parks, then down to 1.9 (lucky us!) at EP.

We are commando-park-people, veterans of the old fast pass system. We used fast passes on all three days. We never attempted to return outside of the time window. Once, I returned 5 minutes early for my window (in World Showcase in EP at the Norway ride), and they let us right in without a word.

We found that the fast passes still helped a lot; the FP line was *always* much much shorter than the regular line, just like it's always been. Because we had to use the FP during the given time window, it just created much more backtracking and criss-crossing in the parks. So, we had to adjust our strategy (I was one adult with two youngish kids, so we didn't have a fast pass "runner", unfortunately).

For example, at MK we got an FP to Peter Pan right at opening, return time starting at 9:25. We did all of our other fantasyland stuff plus Splash Mtn, then we had to stop and think.... ordinarily, we wouldn't backtrack to Fantasyland that early in the day, plus we also had to get our next FP starting at 9:25. We ended up going on Pirates and Aladdin, getting an FP at jungle cruise (return at 10:20), then dashing to catch the end of our window with Peter Pan. Then we went to Haunted Mansion, and by the time we got there the wait was 20 minutes (and we do NOT do 20 minute lines, usually).... so that was our one mistake of the day, not doing that earlier.

Then we had to schlepp back to Adventureland to use the FP on Jungle. Next, I had to figure out how to get the next FP for Buzz (FAR away across the park!) without exhausting my kids with too much trekking back and forth.... but in the ned, we trekked (did a few other things - like Swiss Family - on the way.) We went to Buzz and then had to schlepp all the way back to Liberty Tree for lunch!

It was much more exhausting for us, but in the end we still waited in virtually no lines all day.

Everything worked much better at HS for us, because we don't do TT or RnR.... so, we got an FP to TSM, rode it, went on Star Wars, went back and used the FP at TSM and got another one for the same ride. My kids love giving away an unused FP at the end of the day, so we thrilled a family of 3 by giving them our third TSM fast passes on the way out!

Epcot was a dream.... it was so empty, we road Soarin twice (once with FP, once at opening) with no wait, then only used FP for the Norway ride (maelstrom? can't spell that!) Gave away an FP to Soarin', felt great about that.

Hope this is helpful!! Good luck to everyone - my advice is to carefully think through what time the FP is likely to give you as a return, and then be a bit better strategically than we were about planning the order of your FPs.

Honestly, though - if you have a runner who doesn't mind the dash, the new return time enforcement system would work much better! :thumbsup2

So, the new enforcement didn't seem to increase your wait at all? This is good news. Thanks for the report.

I hope I don't double post, I was in the middle of a response and :wizard: poof :wizard: it disappeared.

This part of your post reminds me of why I used to be so worn out on our trips when we first starting going to WDW. I know it can be done, but I am going to miss using late FP's, we only did it for one trip but it was soooo nice :duck:

I envy your crowd level days of 4-5, lucky you! We are not as fortunate, our trips are in summer when crowd levels are 7-9 and everytime I go I tell myself I won't go all commando and wear myself out. I remember going one year with my mom & DS who was 8 at the time, I'd trek across the park to get FP's for where we'd be going while they'd sit on a bench and people walk. I'd come back and we'd tour towards our FP attraction. Then they'd sit on the bench while I'd go fetch up the next FP. I can't imagine doing that with 2 young kids, I admire your stamina :goodvibes

Thanks for the report, glad you had a good trip :thumbsup2

First FP return time was 9:25? Isn't that earlier than normal (or what used to be normal!)? On a regular 9:00 opening day? I haven't heard about this change yet.

I'm going in June with just my daughter and worried about wearing her out criss-crossing around in the heat. We'll only be there one day so we pretty much do everything then or not at all. I'm actually thinking about renting a stroller for her, even though she's 7 and hasn't used one in a few years. Last year at Universal she ended up piggy-backing on her dad some (and that was WITH lots of breaks), but I'm in not strong enough to put her on my back.

Thanks to OP for your insights!

I facing a similar situation. Going alone with DD(9). DD doesn't do too many coasters so maybe it won't be a huge deal for us. Thinking about it I can't think of more than 2 rides in each park we will want fast passes for with Test Track and Big Thunder down.
MK-Buzz & Peter Pan-maybe Jungle Cruise
Epcot-Sorin' & perhaps Mission Space if those lines are long with TT down-we only do green side
AK-Safari & Kali
DHS-TSM & Star Tours

Writing it out I actually feel better about this. Can't wait to go!!!

Thanks for your report! :thumbsup2 I'm a little worried about our summer vacation, DH is in a conference the first half and I'm not sure about letting the big kids run for FPs.

Glad folks found this helpful!

RE: the 9:25 return time.... yes, it was a regular 9 am start day. Not sure if that is earlier, but it worked out just fine. The next "block" seemed to be 10, then 10:20 at the various rides.

And a word about stamina:

We do the commando thing early in the morning because, in the end, I actually find it far less tiring overall. We get to everything without waiting in lines at all (I'm allergic to lines!), and when things get crowded we can relax and say that we've done what we felt we "needed" to do. We take a much more relaxed pace after 11:00.

That said... that day in MK, I had to keep telling myself, "OK.... this is sort of like a workout! If you were at the gym, you'd be moving even faster, sweating even more.... you're getting a great workout... just keep going, pretend it's a marathon...." ;)

I went over spring break (March 23-27), which was right at the beginning of the new enforcement. I didn't notice a difference in wait times.

I kind of wonder how many people knew that you could use a Fastpass late before? I never knew that until I started coming to the DIS boards before my most recent trip. I'd always been using my Fastpasses during the time printed on them because I thought I had to follow the time on it. Maybe I was the only person too dense to realize I could come back later?

remember last summer walking on to PP right after it opened. The CM stopped me so that a person could use a fast pass. I am not sure if it was a normal one or one received for a special circumstance.

Thanks for the info. My strategy will be to divide MK into two days touring. I'll stay in Fantasyland/Tomorrowland (less trekking) on day 1 and Adventureland/Libery square on day 2 and whatever else I missed on day one. That way, I won't be crisscrossing the park several times over.

Ah, yes. And with park hoppers, you could apply that strategy against all the parks, doing a half day (RD to noon) in the "must do rides" park each day, and the afternoon and evening in the "sightseeing" park.

Good plan! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I never knew either, I read it in the UG when it came out late last year and was delighted - then read on here that times were going to be enforced. Oh well, you don't miss what you've never had :goodvibes
