Fastpass + and how it works

Maybe a dumb question, but do you have to buy your theme park tickets before making fastpass + selections? I was hoping to wait until closer to the trip to buy tickets.

Also, is there a "sticky" with the in and outs of how the new system works? I see so many comments on here about it, but most have opinions thrown in...is there anything that just tells how it's supposed to work?

TIA!

Yes, you must link a ticket to your My Disney Experience account before you can make FP+ reservations.

No FP+ sticky yet, but search for FP+ FAQ and that thread should be a good jumping off point for you.

Thanks.

It looks like I need to buy the tickets soon. If I order them through UT, it takes quite awhile to get them (Jan. 9th) according to their website. That is into our 60 day window by about 3 weeks. Will there be any FP + left by then? How quickly do people have to get on these ride reservations?

I ordered tickets from UT last Monday. They shipped Thursday. I called on Friday and was able I get a copy of the back of the tickets with the numbers on them. Linked them on MDE and made FP picks right then.

Yes, you have to buy a ticket...would it be fair that people who don't have tickets could reserve rides that they may or may not go to?

It depends on how busy it is at the parks. We went a week a go, got the tickets the day before, and picked whatever we wanted.

OP - we are assuming that you are staying on property. Otherwise, don't bother as FP+ is currently only open to those staying on property or that have an annual pass.

Yes, it's on-site. We just haven't gotten the tickets yet. I'm not sure if we'll buy them direct from Disney for just this stay, or get 10 day non-expiring from UT. It's a lot of money to do the non-expiring and we're trying to predict if we'll still be interested in going for 3 more trips after this one or if we'll want to look into other places for winter getaway trips.

If you buy non expire for a future trip, you could lock yourself out of discounts or specials that require a package with tickets, like free dining.

I"m not sure that we've ever been available to go during any free dining promotions and it seems like you can almost always find a room only discount that doesn't involve a ticket purchase...but Disney could change that any time.

I was pretty convinced we should do it, but DH doesn't think it's a great idea. If we spread it over a total of 4 trips (2,2,3,3) one of the trips tickets would be "free". We'd also get the water parks and park hopping which we've never done. I don't think we'd ever pay the extra for those things, but it's not that much more when you look at the 10 day non-expiring. It's just a lot of money to spend when our kids are getting older (HS and College) and may not want to go.
