Fast food rest. charging for water?

In the past few weeks we've visited McDonald's and BK and both were going to charge us the full price for a cup of water....or we could buy a bottle of water for $1.30. So I skipped getting a drink. WHY are they doing this???? I asked the guy at BK and he said that people were buying "water" then filling up with soda....but I was at the drive through window.... I told him that was really sad for honest people like us and he offered me a cup of water for 25 cents.....how can they charge you for a soda when they're just filling a cup with water from the tap???

I say let them take the soda machine BACK to the back and let them fill it up and give me back my free water!!!!

I see this alot in college towns too. I was in a bar early one evening for happy hour with some friends, and asked for a glass of water. The bartender told me it was $3.25. When I asked why, he said apparently all the broke college kids would come in for the "free happy hour buffet" and drink water, which was also free. So they started charging for water to discourage that.

Obviously, I said, I am not a college student LOL. So I said, if you're going to charge me, then give me a beer.

I worked at a McDonalds back in the mid-80s when in high school. Inventory was done thru cup count, so each cup was counted as the price for the item...in other words, back then a large coke was $.65, so each large soda cup would be counted that way.

We did keep small courtesy cups for water requests. I'd bet they still do, but if they don't and you want water I'd bring your own, or at least your own cup.

They still provided you with a cup...money out of their pocket after all. I don't really see why they should provide it for free. JMHO.

It was that way when I worked at Hardee's in the 80's. We were charging for the cup and not ice and water. It generally wasn't the price of a soda, but it was a small charge.
