Fast-drying pants for teen??

My teenage son is going to Europe over winter break on a mission trip. They can carry only a minimal amount of very casual clothes and will wash clothes each night but have no access to a dryer. NO denim. All of his pants are heavy and would take forever to dry. It will be 50 to 60 in the mountains where he is going. They take long underwear to layer for warmth. Any ideas for where and what to buy on a budget?

Walmart sells a variety of wind pants in several colors. They are lined with sweatshirt type material. I own a few pair, an if they air dry it only takes a couple of hours.

I bought a pair of shorts at my local Dick's Sporting Goods store that are great for the outdoors. Not sure if they come in pants, but you should check it out! My shorts are for women, but they probably have something similiar in the men's department. They are made by Columbia and the label says Titanium. Made from 100% nylon and dry really fast. They also fold up into the back pocket into a neat little pouch. The material is kind of krinkly, so they look ok even if they are wrinkled (which happens after being folded up in the pouch). They are light, so if you can find something similiar in pants he would need to layer them with something warm underneath. Not exactly what you were looking for, but maybe it will help!

Try the beach pants at Lands End. They're good quality and dry quickly. Go to the outlet section. They should be on sale.

Bass Pro Shop. They have a very nice variety of zip-off styles that are meant for outdoor wear, and their prices are very reasonable. Zip-offs will be more useful to him in the long run because he will also be able to wear them in summer. For the long underwear, he should have silk or hi-tech wicking synthetic. Don't defeat all the effort on the trousers by sending him with cotton long underwear that would also take forever to dry (and not be nearly as comfortable, either.) You'll probably end up paying a bit more for these than for the trousers, but he'll probably only need one pair.

Don't forget about his regular underwear and socks. Tighty-whities and cotton socks also take forever to dry, so if he doesn't own them already you should buy him a few pairs of sports underwear and runner's socks that will dry quickly when washed in a sink.

For shoes, I would suggest Merrell Jungle Mocs, or the Bass Pro knockoff versions of them, which are fairly decent for lower-priced shoes. They are water resistant but work even for slightly dressier situations.

Also, one last tip. Send him with a long nylon cord he can use for a clothesline, and also a flat rubber jar opener disk, which can be used as a sink stopper when the stopper is missing, which it often is.

I have a set of Columbia PFG pants for travelling...light and dry quickly, but he'll need the "long johns" to keep his legs warm if it's really cool...

For that, look at Underarmor...they make great shirts that dry quick too!!

Look for hiking pants. They are usually lightweight and dry pretty fast.
