I have an interview for a great new job next Tuesday, and today the head hunter says to me just dress fashionable, no corporate attire. The job is for a jewelery design house, and apparently fashion means a lot to them. That and grooming. The last candidate they interviewed blew it by having chipped nail polish. I can deal with the grooming part...not an issue...but the fashion, that is where I am in big trouble.

My look is classic and conservative. I come from a corporate background and have always worked with mostly men so I've dressed very conservatively. But this new opportunity, I am sure, will not appreciate my wool crepe slacks and twin sets.

Please help me put together a great FASHIONABLE outfit for this interview!

Can I take a black suit and jazz it up with a funky top, shoes and some basics...or do I start from scratch??

See...I'm clueless!!

I'm no expert but I would probably do something like black/white pinstripe pants and a fun white dress blouse (think newer ruffles types) paired with a black pointy toe shoes with a higher heel. I would open up the first two buttons and have a funky type black beaded necklace or one of the necklaces that wrap around your neck twice (the first layer close to your neck and the second layer longer). I also might try and get some of their jewelery (if you can) and incorporate that.

Good luck!!!

Thanks! That's sort of what I was thinking.

I'll hit the costume jewelery department at Macy's and the shoe department. Unfotunately, unless I get this job with them, I cannot aford their stuff!

I would start by looking at the online sites of stores you either shop at and/or like. See what they're spring lines look like and get some ideas from there. You could also pick up a few magazines (Cosmo, Vouge, Glamour, Jane) and see what they're showing on the models or just take a look at the ads. That way you can have some idea of "fashionable" things you like and you can go from there - either copying a look or picking pieces that you like to create your own. Good luck!

Megster; I thought of that, but the stores I shop, sell the conservative things I wear...and they want "fashonable". Not sure Talbots is their idea of fashionable. I'm thinking they are looking for something more modern...maybe I'll check out Banana Republic (that is a fashionable store, right?)

I'm 19 and I like things that Talbots has, so I would consider many of their pieces "fashionable". Banana Republic is a great store, also check out Gap (the same company owns both stores). Conservative doesn't mean unfashionable, its just a style, and any style can be fashionable!
Remember also that how others percieve your style is based a lot on how you wear it. Don't wear clothes that you don't feel totally confident in just because you think they're "fashionable". You're uncomfort will show through and that outfit won't look nearly as good as something you may already have had in your closet.

Wow! You are one mature 19 Megster. OT, but I had to compliment her.

As for fashion - I haven't an ounce of it.

This is just my .02, but I would stear clear from places like Gap and BR. I think they want to see your creative side, not what the latest suit at Gap has put in their display window. I would check out some boutique places, and pick and chose pieces you like. Try to avoid the pre-made outfits. Relax and have fun at your interview! :thumbsup2

one of the nes shows this week took a basic black suit & dressed it several ways - can't remember but I think it was Good morning america (maybe they have photos on their website under fashion???)
ANYWAY they put a patterned black shirt under the jacket & added a matching tote & shoes for one style & another style they used a lacy top (can't remember what color)....

Ok so I guess I wasnt much help here - guess I have preggo brain0---sorry - I'll look though & see if I find photos for ya...

I agree with this, and I have a 19 yr old DD!

Thank you all for your suggestions. I went shopping tonight and here is the outfit I put together...

Black trouser slacks with a turquoise pin stripe and cuffed hems

A white empire waiste blouse with hook and eye closure with a lace overlay from just under the empire waiste down and on the cuffs

A mid thigh length black jacket with no colar, I think I need a big pin or something for this...

Black Joan and David pointed toe pumps with aligator on the toes and heel

A chunky turquoise bead type necklace, a thick turquoise bangle bracelet.

Thoughts?

sounds nice and crisp. What will you do with your hair? Consider a haircut or a professional blow out. I think you;ll do well.

Thanks!

I did get my hair cut yesterday on my lunch break. Had the color (roots) touched up today.

I don't think I have ever been this preoccupied with my appearance... :rotfl:
