FANTASY Wet Deck Warning

I slipped and fell on the Wonder in the pool area (no injury). I don't recall the decking being real teak but some synthetic stuff. Seemed like the same material was used on the Dream. I was shocked at how slippery the area was!

I caught an older woman slipping and falling on the Wonder in May. The worst part about it...as she was falling, I reached out to catch her...both feet were under her, she was going down and was going to hit her head, I stopped her and got her back to her feet...she dumped her red drink all over my brand new white linen dress...she then yanked her arm out of my hand and huffed off...like I assaulted her! I wish I could have dropped her at that point and let her fall, but I already got her back to her feet! So those floors are slippery too!

Wow, some people are just rude. You probably saved her from really hurting herself and that's how she acts. I'm sorry.

If the fall is bad enough to need medical attention who is responsible for the bill? If this is a known hazard area it seems unfair that it would be billed to the guest or their medical insurance. Disney should be liable.

I would assume that if there is signage noting that the deck is slippery when wet...they have done their due diligence so its on the person.

Yeah, its funny how people act. I actually tweaked my shoulder catching her. I'm hoping she was embarrassed and not in a huff that I spilled her fresh drink or something. LOL

To paraphrase a different thread elsewhere, I would have been that rude guest who would have, upon seeing her later on the ship, said, "By the way... You're welcome."

Anyone find shoes that help?

I suppose I'm going to have to keep a watchful eye on my dad. He's had bilateral knee replacements.

Every time I see this thread, I think about my experience on the Magic. I'll just go ahead and post it. I completely busted it on the pool deck but not because of water. I was walking with my dd, and had my head turned looking at the pool to try to see ds. I walked full speed into a pole, which threw me down onto the deck like I'd been hit with a baseball bat, wrenching my knee, ankle, and foot, bruising both elbows badly, and giving myself a goose egg on my temple and a concussion. I scared the snot out of the poor CM who was standing right there.

Moral of the story - watch where you're walking, even when it's not wet!

FWIW, as I was sitting in Cabanas that evening with ice on my knee and foot, I was talking to the manager there. She was super nice, and every day after that for the rest of the cruise, we had food treats delivered to the room in the afternoons. Chocolate covered strawberries, cheese and meat trays, etc. I hadn't even mentioned anything like that to her. We had been talking about getting older, what women do to look beautiful, truly completely random topics.

My Mom did a faceplant stepping out of Beach Blanket Buffet onto Deck 9 on our last Alaska trip. There are signs on the floor that say Watch Your Step and she just did not pick her feet up well enough. But she has a tendency not to pick her feet up and has faceplanted at least once on every trip we've been on - at the Airport and at Navy Pier in Chicago to just name a couple.

Wow, so many accidents! Fortunately none of us had this issue on the Fantasy but we watched many people slipping on the pool deck on NCL Getaway a couple of weeks ago. It just seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen!

oh my lord, i have been thissssss close to doing that. those poles are a menace. they keep jumping in my way, lol. its going to happen, its just a matter of when will it happen.

Not on deck but on one of the NY cruises in 2012 I slipped down the stairs from Deck 9 to Deck 8 (the second half of them). I was holding a cup of tea and my foot just slipped over the top of the step instead of landing on the step. My right foot slipped down a few steps but my left foot/leg stayed put so was behind me when I landed. Hurt like heck. I was by myself, tea went flying and I was so embarrassed. A very nice gentleman stopped and helped me up once I was composed enough to stand. My ankle was killing me so I hobbled down to the medical dept. Doc looked me over and said it was strained but not sprained. He suggested I just keep it elevated and iced so when I would sit by the pool I would keep it up and have a bag of ice on it.

My BIL somehow sliced his toe open on the step leading down from the Quiet Cove Pool to the pool deck. He had to go to medical and get it bandaged. All sorts of accidents can happen so be careful wherever you are!!!

That happened to me once, except I was running at full speed at the time, looking behind me, and turned to face forward just as the pole got in the way. I was in third grade on the playground. Ouch! I had quite a lump on my forehead from that one.

Regarding the Fantasy, my friend had a nasty slip and fall on the pool deck on his first cruise. He wasn't sure quite how it happened, but he went down hard and because he had shorts on, scraped the skin on the side of his knee and entire lower leg something fierce. The entire area hurt like heck, and turned into one gigantic scab. He ended up seeing a shore doctor when in port in Cozumel to get it cleaned and treated and to get medication. It does seem like the newer ships' deck material is more prone to slips.

BTW, recently on the Magic, I noticed that the upper deck (the one above the pool deck) has the same artificial deck material as the newer ships, even though the pool deck itself was still real wood. I'm not sure if this was replaced during the recent drydock or some other time, or if it's always been that way. I suppose that the upper deck is much less likely to get wet from pool drippings., although it's equally prone to weather.

This makes me SO nervous as my parents will be joining us for the cruise. I want them to have a magical time, but they are older & their balance can already be off-kilter a little. I am buying my mom some of those water shoes with a good tread to wear on the deck. I wonder why they haven't done anything?

deck 10 on the magic has been a composite type surface for at last a decade. it was like that when i sailed. deck 9 around the outside covered areas, not next to the pools, and deck 4 were teak wood.

a post i read from a few years ago said that new regulations meant they had to use as little wood as possible due to fire risk. i do not think the newer ships have teak decking at all? and not sure how they could make the composite surface less slippery without it being uncomfortable in bear feet?
