There is a slot inside the door that you need to put a card into to turn on the lights. You can use your KTTW card or another card it you wish.

simple...the way you need to stick your key card in to unlock your cabin door, there's a similar device immediately inside the door which "unlocks" the "electricity" in the room to turn the lights on...if the keycard is not in that device you cannot turn the lights on...

i did not know this, but unlike the door to the cabin, some people have said you don't need a unique keycard for the device in the rooms which allows you to turn on the lights- i read after the fact it works with everything from credit cards to old keycards to business cards...

So if I have an old casino card on a "coiled cord" that would work? I could get a suction cup hook for it to hang on for convenience.

Virtually anything that is about the size of a credit card/KTTW card will fit and will work. The idea is to save energy by not having lights on while no one is in the room. Many newer hotels are going to a similar system (yeah, I'm the one in Barcelona who couldn't figure out how to turn on the hotel lights and didn't speak any Spanish.....)

The logic is that if you use your KTTW card and take it with you when you leave, you're automatically turning off the lights, If you are me and you use your KTTW card and leave it in the room, you are going to GS to get a one time open card to get back into the room.

SO, yes, and old KTTW from WDW or DCL will work as will a library card or whatever else is about the same size. No magnetic strip needed; it is a physical thing. I think it hits a switch at the bottom of the slot (but not sure of this). They are NOT coded to the room Any card works.

That type of card should work fine. There have been some reports that cast members will pop them out of the "fully engaged" position when they clean the room to reduce electricity usage while no one is in the room.

We kept ours in the slot the entire time to keep the A/C running and it was never taken out. We were relatively diligent about turning off all lights when leaving, so perhaps our cabin attendant never noticed.

The AC will run whether there is a card in the slot or not. So will the refrigerator and the clock.

The lights and TV will be affected but it seems nothing else is.

You won't need to hang the card when not in use. Just pull it out part way or rotate it so just one corner is held in the slot when you're leaving the room.

on our trip on the Dream we used an alternate card and just left it in the slot the whole time. we are definitely those people who would leave the key in the slot and then not have to to get back in. so to avoid it we just left a random rewards card in the slot the whole time (i think it was our movie theater card. we thought maybe it was magnetic as some sensors are, so we looked for a "swipe" card. nice to hear it's not as we don't usually have extra magnetic ones when vacationing).

what i found hilarious, though, is we would pull the card out of the slot just enough to disengage the sensor (lights out) or we'd leave it engaged but turned off every light in the cabin - but when we'd come back, the cabin steward would have the card engaged and every single light in the room turned on.

we'd giggle and wonder what the point is if the steward is going to flip every light switch to ON and either intentionally or accidentally leave them on in an empty room.

we've seen it on other lines too... all the little postcards and TV messages about conservation of everything (water, detergent, a/c, energy) and every time we'd come back to the cabin at night, every single light would be switched on. including the bathroom. the nightly ritual is remember to find/hit all the switches before getting into the bed

The hotel key cards from most major chains would work fine; that's what we used last year. We would take it out (if we remembered) when we left the room (since that's the whole point - save electricity, etc), but it was nice not to have to remember to pull our KTTW cards out of the slot every time.
