Fantasy having mechanical issues

Dang!! We'll done and I didn't even get the correlation of that, well played. I hate when I miss the jokes. I wanted to originally post that this can only happen on carnival ships but thought that was too snarky.

I was reading something a few weeks ago, when I was looking for something else DCL related and the Dream class even though not required at the time, are built to safe return standards. Which translates to no matter what happens the ships are able to move. At lest in the situations that have come up to date.

What a nasty comment to make when people are concerned about getting their families home. You sound really bitter.
She's not bitter at all. She's right on point, every time something bad happens on any other cruiseline, there are people all over here posting about how you get what you pay for and how DCL ships are so superior maintained. It's a joke and nothing more.

The 64000 question is what could have gone boom, shaken the ship, and only effect 1 drive motor.

may have nothing to do with the motor

possibles off the top of my head: a shaft bearing, a strut bearing, a shaft seal, reduction gear, clutch ... could even toss a blade from the screw!

with any of these one would 'lock the shaft' to prevent further damage

heck I had a rudder damn near fall off once when the nut (a damn BIG nut) on the top came loose and the rudder dropped .... another time the bearings in the strut that supports the shaft after it exits the hull, near the prop attachment, failed not long after 'passing inspection' .... oops, turns out the inspection was done wrong by the yard .... expensive booboo ...

But didn't the Fantasy have this same problem last year? An engine failed and they had to limp back to PC? If I'm remembering right, I have to wonder if it's the same engine.

Also, I didn't read anything about the ship going boom or a big shake. Actually, I didn't read anything before this about this cruise being problematic at all.

.

Exactly! Usually here is the first place we hear about things, but apparently people were posting all over somewhere else - not Cruise Critic because I looked on there when people were making it sound like everyone knew there were issues.

I'm on board, I'm more understanding than most about the mechanical issue. But, they made us be out of our rooms by 11:00. So now we are just sitting around, for multiple hours, it's not a fun situation. Everything is working so it's not one of those terrible cruise ship situations we have heard about. I'm just ready to get home, already missed my flight. We are just chilling in deck 11 but I know it's a mess downstairs.

I went on CC too and tried to Google. No luck.

We were also on 7 aft. Vibration was terrible. No sleep and air conditioning was spotty at best.
Very sorry to hear that. Can I ask what cabin? We are 7 aft next week. And I don't sleep well to begin with. Ugh...

We just got off at 12:10 as express walk-off. I thought the trip was wonderful and since we didn't have a flight this morning the delay just meant bonus cruise time. They added activities this morning (dance party, karaoke, 2 movies in the theaters, crafts, games, trivia, etc) and had the aquaduck open as well as Nemo's Reef. The characters were out and Cabanas was serving full breakfast until 10. Also we were able to stay in our staterooms until it was time to clear customs. I have absolutely no complaints about the trip and aside from the barista making my coffee twice because it was a new, unfamiliar coffee maker and he wanted to be sure it was perfect I observed no post dry dock issues.

It was amazing how loud the engine noise was in O'Gills. I've been on the Fantasy multiple times and clearly the noise was worse after the dry dock.

Concierge hosts said they didn't expect to depart tonight. But of course that's outside their area of expertise and they said they had not heard what the specific problem was. Aside from an engine not working.

We are in a towncar and got out quick but we communicwtion between the ship and dock workers was awful. Everyone giving differently instructions.

Oh and I saw Pete. But I was too shy to say hi. :-/

O.M.G.

So we get to the theater for express walk off like they've been telling us.

Get to the theater they want us to sit down. Where do we put our bags? An officer said, "Out there. Nobody told you?" Nope. The dozen crew we passed to get to the theater never said a word. It's such a cluster.

My hubby is ready to cancel all future cruises. As terrible as disembarking NCL Getaway was, it was nothing compared to this. Royal does all this stuff soooooooo much better. Ugh.

This is absolutely not typical for DCL. Is this your first DCL cruise? If so, I would give it another try. I have found that they have the best embarkation and debarkation of any cruise lines we have done, and we are pretty much steerage class and don't have much special status or anything. The waiting around and confusion are only because of the delay. You don't usually sit around waiting to get off or on a DCL ship. Normally at Port Canaveral, you would eat breakfast, or skip it, and immediately leave the ship. No standing, no waiting.

I've heard that it's risky to go after dry dock, why is that??

A lot of things can go wrong in dry dock. Maybe the ship will be late getting out of dry dock. Or they might know something isn't right and they decide to go and hope for the best.

Well, there are other sites besides the Dis and CC.;) There have been number of posts from folks onboard throughout this sailing about issues on FB.

Fantasy fed us in Cabana's and we are still there enjoying our extra time on board. Of course we aren't going to a flight. We loved the double - dip and had a great cruise. I will say on Friday mid-day they announced they were testing an emergency generator and not to use the elevators UFN.

Reports of lots of issues during the cruise :/ ... I do feel bad for the people on board, apparently theres been issues with AC and toilets the whole time as well as weird vibrating.

Amazing how there can be such a divergence of opinion from different passengers on the same cruise. I wonder how many of the problems that some people had were just the normal kinds of things that happen on every sailing (e.g. there are bound to be some A/Cs and some toilets that don't work properly on a ship with 4000 passengers) and for those to whom they happened, it's easy to blame the dry dock.
