OK, I admit going in that I'm not a huge Fantasmic fan. Yes, it's nice, but I'll take Illuminations (haven't seen Wishes yet) over Fantasmic anyday.

Last night we had dinner with our touring party for December and one of the goals was to figure out what to do with Fantasmic. We've got four adults (two of whom have never seen it) and two children ages 1.5 and 3.5.

Our entire party is only going to be at MGM one evening. Between dinner, Fantasmic wait time and show, and the Osborne Lights, we'd be lucky if we hit one or two rides / shows.

The only other alternative was for some of our party (those of us with APs) to take the kiddies on our arrival night--Saturday. I figure the crowds could be even worse on a Saturday and was just not looking forward to it.

Yes, we could do the dinner package and save a bit of time. But none of those restaurants particularly appeal to us for this trip and the reserved seats are poor (been there, done that.)

And it's a given that the weather will be cold after sundown in December.

So, we decided to just skip Fantasmic altogether. We figure we'll be much better off touring the park after 6pm (7pm showtime) will all of the folks heading over there. We'll certainly be checking-out the Osborne lights around 6:30 - 7:00, and are certain it will be much more relaxed than joining 9,000 other people after Fantasmic.

Honestly now that we've made the decision, it's such a relief. Fantasmic feels like this huge albatross--too much preparation, too much wait time, big crowds afterward. Anyone else agree?

That's why we are going with the Fantasmic Dinner Package. Otherwise, it would take up much too much time waiting.

We were having a similar dilemma and decided to scratch Fantasmic as well.
The wait time was a factor as well. Plus we have all seen it many times and would much rather see Osborne Lights.

Perhaps I'm alone in this, but I don't mind sitting for over an hour, sipping hot chocolate waiting for my favorite show, Fantasmic. I couldn't see this show too many times per trip! LOL But, on the other hand, I could care less to sit around and wait for Illuminations.

To each's own, right?

I'm glad your plan is working out! Have fun!
:sunny:

I believe much of the suggested wait time can be skipped when visiting at slow times of the year. We've walked right in to the single showing 5 minutes early and didn't have trouble getting a seat.

Granted.... We did have to sit in the far left section of the amphitheater, which maybe isn't the MOST ideal spot, but we didn't miss anything.

Also, if there are 2 showings on a particular day, the second one is rumored to always be less crowded requiring less wait time.

If you walk up at the last minute, worst case is you don't get a seat and head home before the masses exit after Fantasmic. The other option is you get to see the show with little or no wait.

I agree with you totally! :D I'll be visiting WDW in December with a friend who has never been to MGM, and I felt almost obligated to take her to Fantasmic, but she will only have 4 days in the parks, and with all the great holiday stuff to see and do in addition to all the regular attractions, we decided to skip Fantasmic. Once we made the decision, I was so relieved. After avoiding Fantasmic for our first three family trips because of all the hassles involved with seeing it, we finally did the Fantasmic Dinner Package in June. Well, none of us felt that the show something we'd want to spend time doing again. It was okay, but we have many, many other things at WDW that we love more and that aren't so difficult to experience.

Yup, I agree, and will be playing our brief December trip the same way. I must admit that DH and my 3 kids loved Fantasmic, but it was not a favorite of mine. The waiting and the crowd was at least part of it (and we did do the dinner package). I am trying to angle in Illuminations for December -- saw that only once and loved it, but it happened to be the least favorite of DH's night time choices.

To each his own, I guess... but we both agreed on this -- Wishes was absolutely fantastic!! I expected it to be "just fireworks" -- good fireworks, but just fireworks. It was positively magical and though you could probably spend lots of time staking out just the right viewing vantage point, I found that unnecessary. Saw it twice from two different last-minute viewing spots and it was just awesome. So if you get a chance... do find time to see Wishes!

You're not alone - ITA. We have taken sandwiches for dinner & had a picnic while we're waiting for Fantasmic. Of course, we have AP's, so sometimes we just go to MGM to see that show.

After Beauty & the Beast, it's my favorite - even over Illuminations!

wow! I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way, I've seen Fantasmic before, but never saw the Osbourne Lights...we were planning on the dinner package but have now tossed that idea and decided on lunch at the Brown Derby and touring Osbourne Lights while everyone else is waiting and waiting and waiting for Fantasmic. It just doesn't seem worth all the hype. We are already doing MVMCP, the CP, the Yuletide Tour...something just had to go...

Out of 7 or 8 trips we have only seen Fantasmic once. We did the dinner package which was the old version at Mama Melroses. It is a good show but not worth waiting an hour for. We were at WDW in Oct and decided to try to get a seat 30 mins before showtime. It was standing room only. We got outta there.

The problem seems to be because of seating it limits most folks from seeing it which is a shame. I like another poster dont care to stand an hour just to wait another hour before the show starts. Thats why we go in off season most of the time so we dont have to wait for everything.

And Illuminations, we never miss this on a trip.

We've only seen it once, and I was hooked. So was my 3 year old dd. We bought the soundtrack, got a video of the show...I don't think we'll ever get tired of it.

We just brought my in-laws. It was his first vacation in 18 years. Out of all the shows (we saw every parade and show) fantasmic was his favorite. And this is a man who does not like crowds! Please let the decision be up to those who haven't seen the show. Just because you have, impedes your decision and limits others. Let them enjoy it and if they don't, consider lesson learned and not time wasted.

Interesting thread. I thought we were the only 'I'm not so crazy about Fantasmic' people!

My sister and her friend joined us last Christmas season. Neither of them had ever seen the show before. So, we went to MGM with them, pointed the way to Fantasmic and said 'see you at the hotel'. It worked out great. They loved the show. Not sure why we don't like it, maybe it is all those evil villans? Give me Illuminations any day! ::yes::

SKIP FANTASMIC???

:earseek:

Someone wake me up, I am having a nightmare.

Now, I could easily skip Spectro @ MK. I think I still have bruises from the last time I tried to see it.

We saw Fantasmic once or twice, see no need to see it again. Not a fave of ours, not worth waiting for, and the lines at RnR and ToT are SO SHORT during that time, it's worth not going!

besides, once you exp the DL version, the WDW doesn't quite stack up =0

You'll enjoy a less crowded park!

My family agrees too ! We saw it once and have skipped it on all subsequent trips. In contrast I often see illuminations 3 times !

I was just going to post a question to see if I was crazy for planning on skipping it. I've never seen it before - the crowds and hassle have always seemed too crazy. And this year we have a 2 year old and I'm pregnant and we are trying to coordinate with a large extended family and it is Christmas week. I'm guessing from what I see here that it's not such a bad thing to put it off (yet again!) for another trip.
