I posted this on the family board and they suggested I posted over here to get some ideas. Thanks for your help!

Hey all
This is my first time to really wander around the Family board but I am helping some friends of my plan a trip. Its dad, mom, daugher (21) and grandson/son (7). The 7 yo has type 1 diabetes and I was wondering about snacks/lunches/dinners/ect. Can anybody give me info on what you have gotten in the past. They will be on DDP and we are doing ADRs in buffets as it seems they can get a better selection of food and probably be able to control more what he eats. I know that the CS meal comes with a dessert, so any info is welcomed, pics as well! We have went on DDP but never really thought about this type of thing.

Thanks!

While you're waiting for specific responses (and they will come), see the FAQ on this forum. It's one of the threads near the top of the list of threads, and addresses pretty much everything!

One thing that may help is that they can bring snacks into the park for him. We pack special snacks that will keep for our son in our checked bag ( we always fly) and then when we get to the resort we have a few items that he can snack on and we can replace dessert if we need to.

WDW does not give carb counts -people have asked and have been told that WDW will not give carb counts.

Besides the information in the disABILITIES FAQs thread and what people have posted, here's a link to a recent thread about carb counts at WDW that might be helpful.

ALso, you can look at the restaurant menus to get an idea of what is provided. Link to the wdwinfo restaurant menu page

You can click on each restaurant and get a menu. You will find that most of the counter service restaurants have no sugar added brownies as a dessert. Most of the counter service restaurants share the same desserts (no sugar added brownies, cheesecake and carrot cake). Some restaurants have a different selection, which may include no sugar added strawberry parfait.

Allearsnet also has a menu page

Some of the menus may be more up to date on the wdwinfo page and some on allearsnet. Many places have fresh fruit, even if they don't list it. They don't list things that they may make on request at the Full Service Restaurants.

Here is a great site for info on Disney with T1. http://allears.net/pl/diabetes.htm

I second this recommendation. We made extensive use of this info before our trip with our then 7 year old son with T1D. In all, we found that by planning ahead (good touring plan - we love Tour Guide Mike) that we managed very well and only had a few minor lows from the extreme heat. We were there in August. If they are used to eating out and estimating their carbs, I don't think WDW is much different than anywhere else. We go a lot of places where we have to guess, but just look at what it compares to that we do know and we are usually pretty good.

Do remind them that they may have to back off of his dose a bit depending on how he responds to the huge amount of walking, etc.

Thanks for all the info! I printed the info off allears for them, and will print the other. I have been talking to them for over a year and they have finally decided to book a trip so it is their first time and want it to go so smooth that they can not believe it! We are going on the dining plan. I know there was a snack thread with pics but all those gave me a sugar high! What are some good snacks for in the park?

Thank so much for your help! I work with people with disabilities and my parents have t2 but t1 is so different. Plus I dont want them to have to worry about anything. Just be able to go and have a magical time!

My son also has T1D, but is younger (so easily distracted from the yummy looking snacks... :lmao:) . We found that bringing snacks with us worked better, but we didn't have the Dining Plan, so there were no snack credits to use up. If they've taken him out to restaurants, and are pretty good at carb counting, it should be fairly routine. We found it helpful to bring a folding measuring cup so we could get portion sizes more accurate.

The First Aid stations are wonderful, if you need them. We used them twice for pump site changes, and the staff were really friendly.

Make sure they bring plenty of supplies, and test often. The amount of walking, and the crazy schedules, really do change blood sugars dramatically.
