Family tree software

anyone have reccomendations for free or cheap software? I was using MY Hertiage but its decided that my grandmother is married to my aunt. its decided my aunt was born 5 times and should be listed 5 times. Im frustrated since I entered it all right and now its being dumb.

I've heard Geni is free. I have no idea if it is any good. I use Ancestry.com. It is excellent.

I don't know which one my brother uses, but the one thing he impressed upon me was the importance that whatever software you use support the standard GEDCOM format. Software comes and goes, over time, but your family tree data should last forever eh? And GEDCOM is the way to help ensure that you won't have to re-do everything all over again, someday.

I have used Roots Magic for the last 5 years and I love it. I think the cost is reasonable an it was easy to download.

It is the most intuitive software I have found.

Easy to create data, reports and GED

DH used Ancestory.com when he searched out family trees. I thought that it was reasonably priced and was well worth the money as we were able to link up to other family members trees to complete ours. Many interseting insights were made.

My cousin uses Family Tree Maker which is Ancestry.com's software I think.

I use Reunion. It is a complex Mac based program.

Thanks for all the answers. That gives me a place to start. I know I need to pick one to create the tree. Too much infromation not to have a tree.

I have used Family Tree Maker for many years and I love it. It does support Gedcom files. You can export and import them. Also, they are somehow affiliated with Ancestry.com, I believe, because they have a feature when you are a person's page you can click a button and it will search for info on that person in their database.
