Family Question about Checking in at Airport

I have flown with my baby four times now as a lap child and never been questioned. I have flown with my toddler as well with no issue. TSA states you only need them for international travel, and some airlines want proof if they think your lap child is over the age of two. But I don't bring then with us - if they got lost or stolen it would be a huge headache.

My "in case" is that my son and I have different last names (my name is on his passport and obviously birth certificate). I do know people with different last names who have been questioned. Do I really think it would be a problem? No, it could probably be answered very quickly but with "proof" it's not even an issue.

They don't care! It doesn't matter that you have different names.

Doesn't matter they don't need or want "proof" of who is flying with who or why - and fiwi most of what has been suggested here isn't even considered "proof" by the TSA including a birth certificate!

I fly with my kids, as well as my nieces and nephew as the solo adult. All have different last names, ages and skin color and never once have any of them been asked for ID (until they were 18) or who they were flying with or why.

Asked their name yes, where they are going occasionally etc.

TSA is charged with matching the passenger to the boarding pass and nothing more! Even when my niece who was very proud of her new drivers license presented it the agent said - are you 18? She said no and he said put that back :)

The exception to this is a lap child flying free on parents lap and that is an airline requirement not a TSA requirement. SWA is known for requiring all lap babies to have proof - other airlines are spotty on that enforcement. Again has nothing to do with being able to fly but applies more to proving your are entitled to a "discount fare".

Really the only reputable place to research the TSA rules is here :)

You are absolutely right, but I'm afraid you are never going to convince some people.

oh I know! but thanks for reminding me. :thumbsup2 It just drives me crazy when people are shown the rules but still tell people other things.

Goes along with telling people to get notarized letters saying you have permission to fly with kids. Unless the parent is going to file kidnapping charges, and put out missing child order, no one at the airport or airline cares who is flying or with who as long as they have a ticket.
