Family of 5?

Sorry, you can't stack discounts. You can use either a code(if one is available) or AAA but not both. If you go during free dining (if it is offered again next year) then you pay the rack rate.

Thanks!

I kind of suspected it might be true, but figured I would give it a shot!

OK, back to plan A

and LOVED IT.... so fun and so inexpensive....it was $100 more total than 1 room at POR and to us seemed worth it to have the space. Plus the theming was fabulous for our kids [they were 6,4,3 at the time].

this next trip we're doing 1 room @ Poly. I know I'll miss the privacy but I'm sure other aspects will be nice too.

We looked into the cabins [they were a little cheaper than Poly].

You could also rent a 1 bedroom from DVC member although you'd want to bring an airbed or something.

I know it's frustrating as a family of 5....

Trish

You'll LOVE the Poly. We stayed there last time and it's great. The rooms are large. They have two QUEEN sized beds and a daybed which is rather nice. DH & I can't sleep in a double bed. We absolutely can't tolerate it - nor can we stand to sleep separately. We actually demanded a king sized bed when we were put in a double room on a trip in KY... we decided to stick it out for a night and just couldn't do it. Now when we travel, I go to great lengths to find out if the two bedded rooms have queen sized beds.

Now DH is spoiled... won't stay anywhere but the Poly. It means we don't get to go as often (as we're saving up), but it's worth it to us.

We were definitley booking a family suite at AS Music... 7 nights at $179 per night for a total of $1253 (before taxes and stuff)

Then I started thinking....

A base room at the Contemporary would be $259 per night. Minus the AAA 15% discount, it comes to $1541 for the same 7 nights.

Disadvantages:
-$300 more
- One room instead of a suite

Advantages:
- We could WALK to the MK
- accessiblity to so much via the monorail
- deluxe resort: restaurants on site, pool slide, etc.

I am most definitley losing my mind:headache:

We did the same type of calculations and then added in tickets, DDP, travel etc. for 5. We realized that the "other stuff" actually cost a lot more than the accomodations and we will now be staying at the Poly when we go next month!:rotfl:

I am going throught the same craziness!! I think I'm all set with where we want to stay, then I see pictures of another resort or read a post that makes me think "hmmm, maybe we want to stay there..."

Do I want a family suite at ASMu...Poly with the daybed...Contemporary with the daybed....I think WL also has a room with a daybed....pricewise, we should probably choose ASMu family suite, but the amenities of the other resorts really make it a tough decision...not to mention PRICE!!!

Just the thought of being close enough to WALK to the Magic Kingdom makes the whole trip seem so much easier. If the price differential really turns out to be only $300, we might be able to find the money.

I have visions of bringing a very tired 5 year old back to the hotel for a nap and a swim while my husband stays with the older 2, or of all 5 of us swimming the afternoons away. That 20 minute bus ride to ASM is sounding longer and longer.

I just wish Disney would post next year's rates already. Then I could do the numbers, make a decision, and start concentrating on THIS summer's vacation upstate!!

And that doesn't even count the long walk to the bus stop outside the park entrances or the wait for your resort bus to arrive.
I carried a sleeping DD from ASMu bus stop to the room after she fell asleep on that long ride back from MK once. It wasn't fun, especially since I also had to manage the folded stroller when exiting the bus alone carrying my sleeping princess down the steps.

In addition to the park proximity, you don't have to fold strollers on the monorail - a major plus in my book for those with smaller children.
IMHO, when divided by the number of days you'll stay, $300 is not a lot for the added convienence and amenities you'll find at CR.

We normally travel with 5 also (two teens + a six yr old) and like to stay at the yacht or beach club, mostly for the location but also for the children's pool.

DD6 is petite and at barely 45 inches tall, the 3'4" (40" deep) entry levels of most main pools at the resorts are just too deep for her to stand in while the "baby" pools at some of the resorts are small enough that they're filled only with toddlers leaving no room for older kids too short to enjoy the main pool.
4-7 is an in-between age for resort pools it seems and BC/YC's Stormalong Bay meets the challenge with a huge sand/swim/play area for the younger set in addition to a standard baby pool and the largest main pool (both with a sand bottom - how cool is that for relaxing creative playtime) on property.

To economize, it's not unusual for us to skip the waterparks & more option on MYW passes. We save an extra $250 that way to offset the higher room rate as we nearly never use it when staying bc/yc anyway and passes can always be upgraded with waterparks added after arrival should we decide to hit TL or BB that week.

Great! Another resort to add to the list!!!! :) After reading Dancemom03's post, I need to check out BC/YC...those are two I never even considered! How do they sleep 5? Daybed?

I am facing the same decision as well - but our 5 are 4 adults and one teen. I was set on POR, even if all 5 of us go next year (which I don't know for sure yet). Planning to bring an air mattress for the fifth person. I know it would be crowded but we have travelled together in one room many times and it is not a problem for us. The only way I can justify another Disney trip is to do it as cheaply as possible but I really do not want to stay at a value this time. Five of us in one room with free dining (HOPING) would be a great deal. The Poly would be great but at over twice the price I don't think we could manage it. I am also thinking about the cabins but really have no interest in Fort Wilderness since we already live in the forest.

Just wanted to add my .02 to the topic. We are a family of 5 and began in the same place you did. I stressed for months and finally my DH and I decided thast for the extra few hundred we would take the Poly and have the convenience of MK and EP via the monorail.

The one thing 2 of my kids begged for (DS:cool2: 10, and DSpirate: 7)was a pool with a waterslide. This eliminated the values for us. DDprincess: 5 just wanted a "nice" hotel. That was the only thing they wanted and I felt is wasn't unreasonable. We have gotten the whole family in for the saving and the kids have really saved a lot. They will use their money for spending on extras. They were even willing to help put their money towards staying at a hotel with a waterslide. The thing is they think we are staying at a mod next summer but we are really staying Deluxe this October.

You will love wherever you stay, but if you can go with the CR, do it. You will have peace of mind and be able to quickly get back for pool swims. :thumbsup2

Sorry, didn't mean to muddy the pool waters of your decision. They have two queens and a twin size daybed that you can request be made up each evening with turndown service.

BC/YC is less expensive than the Poly and IMHO, it's the best pool on property but rates are also a little more than CR. On the plus side, you are more likely to find an AP rate at BC/YC in a standard room than you are at CR or Poly lately. Location features access to the boardwalk area, plus a sidewalk or watertaxi to Epcot & MGM.
For smaller children I think there's no better pool around and they also have a bonfire on the beach many nights along with movies on the big screen on their sand beach afterwards.

If you're planning on staying in any deluxe, I'd definitely get at least one AP for the room discount - it's never guaranteed but AP rates are usually available at BC/YC closer to travel dates.

With an AP you can also buy the Disney Dining Experience card which saves us quite a tidy bit of change as opposed to the dining plan (unless we're talking about free dining of course, then there's obviously no comparision). With two teens and two adults in addition to DD6 we save enough in one or two meals to pay for the card and the rest of the year/trip is all discount/profit.
Our family doesn't tend to eat appetizers and desserts if ordering ala carte so the dining plan meals don't always offer as much of a value for us - plus you can't buy DDP with some discounted room rates but you can always use the DDE card.
We do eat at least one nice TS meal per day but after the 20% off with DDE (added to the fact that DH and I almost never order appetizers or desserts ala carte) we do better without paying extra for the dining plan.
When we did free dining in 2006, we ended up with over 20 snacks to use on our last day and 13 CS credits. It's was a last minute smorgasboard of conspicious food buying to use those last CS credits which ended with us treating two other families to dinner just before Earl of Sandwich closed late that night. The girls spent the remaining snack credits dipping marshmallows and pretzels in chocholate & candy goo at Goofy's Candy Shop as they were locking that store's doors before midnight to bring home gifts for friends.
The dining plan was nice but we obviously don't know how to effectively use it...

First off, thanks to everyone for making it more confusing to pick a resort. :) I'm in the same family of 5 boat (DDs 10, 8, 5). I was planning the WL (woods view) for my Jan 08 stay. Does the WL have 2 Q or 2 Dbl beds? Also, when I call to book the room only, are the CMs strict about 5 "exceeding the room capacity?"

Stayed at POR, back in 2004, would consider it again, but the DM wants to try a different resort. Poly priced out more than I would like to spend. I was also considering the CR (std view).

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks.

They are strict with occupancy in Disney hotels. WL should have queen beds. You'd need the junior suite or whatever deluxe room they have to have five in the room. I don't think the standard room has the daybed.

I have a family of 5, and this is our first trip as well. My children are older thourgh: 15, 15, and 11.

We will be there this August (2007) a few days before the free dining plan starts (figures, doesn't it). After doing some research and reading reviews, we chose the POR. I have read very few bad things about this resort and seems most people just love it. A lot of the comments talk about how quiet it is and relaxing after a long day. This is really important to us after all of the crowds all day. Our kids are really good swimmers and the pools were another advantage and perk for us.

I am looking forward to it and I hope that I made the right choice. 26 days to go before I find out.:cheer2: :hourglass
