We love Knott's and there are often discounts for it so keep an eye out for that. It has a lot to offer, even if it is not Disney. Disneyland will always be our home park, we had season passes or AP's for at least 8 years. When you enter main street notice the light in the window above the firestation. That is the lamp Walt would light whenever he was in the park. They leave it on now at all times, because Walt is in the park, always. There are many unique things in DL that WDW doesn't have, I would focus on that. If they love Disney they will love Disneyland. Plus you get the added bonus of being in Southern California! Lagunia Beach is beautiful and a personal favorite, but there is also Venice beach to the north and that is another experiance. Huntington Beach is where they hold the OP Pro tour so if any one is into surfing HB is a must see. Dana Point is also nice. I also recommend Legoland if you have time. We like to go for two days because Legoland has an incrediable bounce back deal (I think it is about $5 for the second day). We have trouble seeing everything in one day because we love to play with the Legos.
Have you checked out the www.mousesavers.com site for DL info. There is some sort of multi day/ place pass that includes DL, Knott's, and San diego Zoo (and one other thing I can't remember what)
On a side note I hear people say all the time you can do Disneyland in one day. I disagree, you need two to really do it all. DCA might be a one day park. And if you stay onsite it is not the same as WDW onsite- less space means less theming and also means you are very close to the parks, actually you are really in them.
