When we took this tour, we met Jasmine (DD's favorite) instead of Peter Pan at the end. Jasmine was going to take us on Peter Pan's ride but the line was long and she was being mobbed by kids so she diverted us to the carousel which made DD quite happy. I think if we had expressed a strong preference, Jasmine woud have been agreeable to a different ride. We also had earlier bought a Jasmine costume at downtown disney as a surprise gift for DD. The surprise ended up being on me that we got Jasmine for "our" character that day, so after the tour, I quietly slipped it into DD's backpack (we have the kids carry their own light packs for their souveniers, snacks, sweaters, raingear, camera's, autograph books, and brita bottles). DD later deduced that Jasmine had slipped it into her pack as a thank-you gift for helping save the kingdom by finding Hook's hook. (the theme of the tour). She said " I guess Jasmine's gotten good at getting into backpacks sneakily by hanging around with Aladdin, the Prince of Thieves". We bought the costume oversized and she's still using it three years later. Because of the costume coming from Jasmine, the tour is DD's most favorite Disney memory of all time. She's 10 now and still thinks the costume came from Jasmine. If your kids don't carry a pack and you want to try this, you could slip the surprise gift to the character to give to the child directly.
