Family from CA with questions...

Someone posted not too long ago about having success buying points for the first time at a resort other than SSR and getting them directly from Disney. The price per point was $84. Could a CM do that and still get the 15% discount? That would be $71.40/pt. -- might be worth looking into! Here's the thread:

That's the thread that really put me over the edge to call Disney directly before even thinking about a resale...I saw it recently and the "lightbulb" turned on over my head. I'll definitely let everyone know what they say. If I do get the discount, that just means I'll be able to get more points rather than spending less (don't tell my DW!!!!!)

Thanks again everyone! The help has been more than incredible. I can't wait to get back to WDW!

Let me guess...that light bulb was in the shape of "Mickey" ears, right? Good luck with your call tomorrow.

Ok...just got off the phone with DVC. I can't buy SSR unless I'm actually there. They aren't available to CA yet. I can only buy a ROFR contract. So, now the fun comes trying to find something that fits our needs but is still available in CA. I listed my preferences as OKW, BWV and BCV.

My contact is Linda and was extremely helpful and friendly...now the hard part is sitting back and waiting!!!!!

One more thing...the discount is available on ROFR contract and puts the points at $71.40. Can't beat that with a resale that's for sure!!!!

Well, at least you've got the whole SSR thing figured out. If I were you, I would check the resale brokers on a regular basis and make offers on anything that peaks your interest as you can still get resales for less than $70/pt and depending on how many points you're buying, the closing costs will add another $500 or so to the total sale.

This may be quicker than waiting for one of your preferred resorts through Disney (especially since they know you will be paying a reduced cost per point w/CM discount). They would have to get hold of a really low priced contract to buy it back and still be able to make a profit on a sale to you @ $71.40/pt.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!!!

We have a similar problem not being able to talk to DVC about purchasing from NE. We bought at SSR while we were there last year. But what one salesrep told me was that I could have made a reservation at a Disney resort hotel, paid my deposits but not the full amount due, then once we got there to the property we could convert the whole thing to DVC, so we wouldn't have wasted the cost of one whole trip before getting into DVC. I'm not sure of all the particulars of how this would have worked because we didn't do it that way, but there's just one more monkey wrench to throw out there!

Now that I know I can only take a ROFR from Disney and not SSR, I can watch the resales closer too. Knowing I can go through Disney at the $71 p/pt, I can still look for a decent resale and see which way it works with closing costs.

Definitely keeping my options open. I have gone ahead and booked 3 rooms at POFQ just in case DVC doesn't come through in time and I found roundtrip airfare today for $196 from LAX to MCO for when we want to go on Frontier. I'll probably book it tomorrow so I can start my "official countdown clock!"

I'll keep everyone posted!

You may be able to do a slight bit better via resale if someone accepts a low-ball offer but if DVC has them (and they did a couple of weeks ago) I'd jump on it. In my opinion you can't beat no closing costs (probably a few bucks per point right there) and immediate access to your points so you can cancel your POFQ ressie and instead, live large at OKW.

Good luck!

That's definitely what I plan on doing. I'm just keeping my options open. Yesterday, all they had available for CA was HH and VB. Linda said she would definitely keep me updated as things come available. I will probably go with the "no closing costs" through Disney since the price point is about the same.

Thanks everyone.

Tinkerbeck was the person that started the thread about buying BWV points directly from DVC. She started a new thread yesterday that they will have to cancel the 200 pt. purchase due to her husband getting laid off. She said she was calling Byron @ DVC today with the bad news. You might want to call him if you're interested. I feel badly for Tinkerbeck as she was so excited about the purchase but maybe someone can make lemonade out of these lemons. :(
