I am a communications guy and here's my advice;
while in the parks cell phones are a good source of communication, but service goes in and out depending on your carrier and phone model, and batteries die.
so instead of cell phones, families use 2 way radios ("walkie-talkies")
The big thing with radios is that too many people use them. here's some tips for using radios at disney.
1) buy radios that have the range of at lease 5 to 7 miles, as the structures will impact to radio's signal.
2) buy a brand name such as Cobra, Motorola, Midland, kenwood etc... the reason is that these normally have CTCSS/DCS privacy codes so you can program them so you can only hear your family.
3) NEVER use channels 15 to 22 as these you need a license to use because they are GMRS frequencies. Channels 15 to 22 are reserved for EMERGENCY services, and private radio networks.
4) if you happen to be on a channel with other people who are not your family, be kind and wait untill they stop talking before you transmit. Also share channels, they are public and no one can own a channel, unless its channels 15 to 22.
5) remember that radios are not toys. They are pieces of equipment. Do not fool around on them. If anyone is fooling around or annoying you, they are potentially at risk of getting in trouble with the Federal Communications Comission. Do not respond to others instagating, simply take a deep breath and change the channel or put a privacy code on, plus if I'm there, I'll take care of them.
6) Disney does not use those channels, so there will be absolutly no official disney buisness happening.
7) remember to have fun and be careful. If you have any questions regarding communication at all, just ask me. You might even catch me at Disney, ill be the only one wearing a Secret Service style head set for my radio.
Thanks
Mike

We invested in walkie-talkies to take skiing in case we wanted to split up, (or got lost in the trees:scared1: ). They are great at WDW. We have rechargeable Motorolas.

You also avoid those roaming fees!
