??False Negative Pregnancy Test?

Guys....fair warning - you may want to skip this one....unless you're a doctor!!

Have you girls ever heard of or experienced a FALSE NEGATIVE pregnancy test?

I was 100% convinced that I was pregnant. I'm over a week late (which is not normal for me) - and I'm experiencing a frequent feeling of "let down"... along w/ this, my sleep pattern is WAY off. I took a test and it was negative.

Do you think I should go ahead and make a Dr's appt? - since I AM late...what else could it be??

Well false positives are very rare. You could just be testing too early. Wait a few days and try again. But also look very closely there could be a very faint line. Even the faintest of lines indicate a positive.

Actually when my friend was pregnant this exact same thing happand to her. She was very sure she was pregnant all the classic signs. She kept testing and it kept coming out neg. I told her to go to the Doctor and see, sure enough she was pregnant. Her hormone level was not very high, she needed to take some type of medication for this, I can't remember what exactly.

i had a false positive in the hospital one time. You should of seen me argue with that dr as I knew there was no way I was.
So I imagine a false negative is more then possible.

It could be several things...this happened to me too.

1. Testing too early and the levels aren't high enough.
2. Or you could be having a very very ...I emphasize very early miscarriage. My OB told me that this is common with women who are late...they are pregnant but the pregnancy doesn't hold the first month so their period is late and unusally heavy. Most women don't realize they were pregnant and just think its a heavy cycle.

I would definitely wait another week to test. My OB never wanted to test me unless I was at least 2 weeks late.

I was over a week late and had tested several times and kept getting a negative answer... when I was just over 2 weeks late I went to the doctor again and finally found out that I was prego... why didn't it show up sooner?? I don't know.
With my first I wasn't even late and it showed positive! (12)
With my second... over 2 weeks late before I got the positive. (9)
With my third... wasn't late yet. (4)
And with my 4th... didn't realize that I was late till I was filling out some paper work for the doctor and it showed up really dark and fast! (2)

Also what kind of tester did you use?

If you think that you are and a pee test doesn't show it call the doctor and they can do a blood test!

Do I WANT to be PG? Well...I have a DD-6 and a DS-1 ... It's really kinda too early for my presonal preference - but after going a few days thinking I was, I was beginning to get excited about it! The only thing that freaks me out is having a 1 year old and an infant in child care ... financially...

I used "First Response" - the one that says, "5 days sooner"...

The main thing is that we are leaving for Branson Tomorrow!!!! I guess I'll know after riding POWDERKEG ride and WILDFIRE....If I get sick (which coasters don't make me sick) - then I'll know!!

Maybe it's stress from the up coming trip... you hoped it would come and go before the trip and shows up the day you leave! Or stress from just not knowing if you are or not... could be, but maybe not!?!?

I have a friend that found out a couple weeks ago that she is prego with #2... #1 will turn one in about 2 weeks... they will be 18 months apart!

That should have been a good test, did you get a double pack so you can take it again in a day or two?

Try to relax and not stress over it, enjoy your trip!

I would call your doctor and get a quantitative blood test. Based on your last period date, that should tell you a lot. If you are a week late, you probably should have a positive by now, unless it was a chemical pregnancy. *hugs*

A friend of mine took a test at a week late and it was negative, then she took another 2 days later, still negative. Two days after that it was finally positive, so false negatives do happen. It just might be too early to know for sure. I would suggest buying another test and taking ti with you. If it's a multi pack then take one every other morning as your levels might be higher at that point.

Before I found out I was pg with #2, I went through this. About 1 week before my period was due, I just "knew" I was pg. I decided to buy a home pg test even though it was too soon. Of course, it was negative. I laughed to my DH and decided to wait a week before buying another test. Well, the next day, I compulsively decided I could NOT wait anymore, so I bought a two pack -- both negative and decided to wait another 6 days before testing again. Again, that resolution lasted less than a day. This went out until I finally test pg -- a week AFTER my period was due. I decided that if I wasn't pg, I would need to seek some professional help. It was the only time in my life that I have ever been that compulsive about something.

My first test was negative with both of my children, and the first positive tests had the faintest lines, you could barely see them(Of course, I tested early with both because I knew I had gotten preg.). You could call you Dr just to see what he or she says. They may want you to come in for bloodwork, or they may just have you wait and take another test at home.

Give your OB a call and request a script for "Quants" (quantatative HCG's... pregnancy hormone). Simple blood test- very accurate- will be very clear cut as to whether or not you're pregnant. If you just missed a period last week, you may not have a positive pregnancy test for another week or so.

I'm a labor and delivery/ obgyn triage nurse. We see the ALL of the time. Good luck!

Just to add to the testimonials. I once tested on a Friday and was neg. Rechecked on a Monday and was postive. Just may not be enough hormone to pick up yet.

Also, you should check first thing in the AM, first pee of the day, more concentrated hormone that way. Sometimes if you test during the day, early on, the hormone is too diluted to register a positive.

Yes I have had false negatives.- Just too early testing. Now the tests are much more sensitive. But I was going to say use First Response and that is the one you used.
I would be testing again before riding any coasters. And hello that is exactly how I found out I was pregnant with my last(4th) We were heading to Busch Gardens and I just didn't feel right. I said gosh I better make sure I am not pregnant. Well surprise surprise I was! So I think it is the curse of the amusement parks.

Home tests don't always work . . . urine tests don't always work . . .

A story from 14 years ago: I took a home pregnancy test -- negative, but still no period. Took another and another and another -- all negative, but still no period. Test brands varied, but I always did the test correctly (first thing in the morning, etc.) Finally a month rolled by, and it was time for my second period. I went to the doctor and said, "Either I'm pregnant or something's wrong with me." The doctor's urine test showed negative, but her blood test -- given on the same day -- showed that I was, indeed, pregnant.

When I went to the OB/GYN and had an ultrasound a few weeks later, the baby's size showed that I had been pregnant from the first time I suspected it.

My unusual story aside, in general, it's essentially impossible to have a false positive test (unless your test has been mixed up with someone else's or the test itself was bad in some way). Why? Because for the test to show up positive, some preggo-hormones must be present. If they are present, well, you're pregnant!

On the other hand, it's common to have a false negative test -- especially if you're testing early. The hormones may be there, but they may not be strong enough yet to show up.

My home test came out negative..........as did the doctors!!!!!!!!! I believe that I concieved in mid Sep some time, only in early Nov tests came positive. It was wierd.

I'll suggest trying a different brand and then calling your doctor as well. I absolutely hated First Response. I had THREE of their tests that came out negative after I knew I was pregnant. I had the quant test done the next day and my levels were way high that they should have detected it on the pee test. Even my digital I took three days before said "Pregnant" (I wanted the lines on a test to show my DH since the digitals don't always do that). So not all tests work.

Even if you are not pregnant, I would still call the doctor. For me being a week late might be a sign that something is wrong.

I kept getting negative tests with my 3rd child from 1 day late until 2 weeks late. I'd take the test, it would come back negative, and I'd throw it in the trash and say, "Well, THAT'S wrong" every couple of days for 2 weeks before I finally got the positive.

Give it a few days and try again.
