False advertising...aarrrgghhhh

I just got back from JCPenney, where I went to return an item I bought from the catalog.

When I was finished, I went up to the infants dept to see if they had any good deals (alot of the store was 60% off!).

Well, I found an entire display of Pooh crib blankets....beautiful....and the sign on the rack said 60% off!! YEAH!!!

So I grabbed one and took it to the register. The cashier was miserable. She scanned it and it came up full price. I told her that they should be 60% off, and she said "well they're not" and tossed it into a pile of unwanted merchandise.

I just stood there for a moment, and then I thought, "I'm not going to take this crap" and told her to call a manager. She wouldn't even look at me, but pointed over to the handbag area and said "she's over there", and proceeded to call the next customer over. I was ready to flip out.

I approached the manager and asked her if I could show her something. I led her over to the display and she said "Oh, that sign is not supposed to be there" and took it off and walked away. I said, "excuse me, but I'm pretty sure this could be considered false advertising". She turned around and said "OK, I'll give you 60% off."

:jumping1: :jumping1:

Yup, I took it!

That's ridiculous!!! At least the manager finally honored it.

Good for you!! If the sign was there by mistake that is their loss.

Things like that burn me up, too!:firefight :firefight

I am glad that you pointed out the sign and so very glad that you got the blanket 60% off!!!!!!!!!!!!!:smooth:  :smooth:

My sister goes off on salespeople like that! I wish I had the nerve to, but I usually just put the item back! I am getting a little more forceful in my old age, so maybe I will start getting some good deals!

I had a similar situation at Pennys awhile back. I bought a bedspread, pillow shams and bedskirt. I paid almost $500 for the lot. When I got home, there was a flyer in my mail showing the same bedspread, etc. was going to be on sale the next day at 30% off. I took my sales receipt back to the store and asked if I could get the sales price. The clerk told me no. I asked to see a manager and she said that I should have waited for the sale. I told her that I would have if I'd have known. I asked why the sales clerk didn't tell me that the item would be on sale the next day if I waited. She got huffy and told me that I shouldn't count on getting the sales price after the fact. I pointed out to her that I have a VIP charge card with Pennys because I am such a good customer and that I would not want to have to start shopping elsewhere. She finally gave me the sale price, but she wasn't happy. You'd have thought that the difference was coming out of her paycheck!

I know it's frusturating but as someone who has worked in sales, customers somtimes move signs and place them in areas which they should not be. The manager did the right thing by giving it to you anyways but I don't believe that to be false advertising if it wasn't intentinally placed there. If it was, that's a whole other story.

Best Buy is notorious for doing this, and this is why I really don't like that store. My bf found Windows Office or something of the like with a sign saying it was $150 off. Every single box had the sticker on it advertising it as $150 off. Of course, he took one up to the front and wanted to buy it. It rang up at full price, and my bf told them about the sign and pointed to the sticker. The clerk looked at it, shrugged his shoulders and said it wasn't right. We asked to speak to a manager, and of course the manager said they wouldn't honor it.

I then told him I would personally never shop in that store again because I CONSTANTLY see things mispriced. The manager challenged me to find some, and I came back up front within 2 minutes with a $5.99 DVD priced $30.99 and two Gameboy games marked for a penny. I kid you not. These items had been mispriced for at least two weeks, because I had made jokes about trying to buy the game for a penny. The manager sort of rolled his eyes and told me that it would be practically stealing if I attempted to buy the game at a penny, then put his hand on my back and started moving me towards the door.

To this day (this was over 6 months ago) I have NOT purchased anything from a Best Buy, and never will again. My bf loves the store though. I'll still go in with him and what's really funny was that those mispriced items are STILL sitting in the bins. I think people just put them back when they find out they're full price...and the workers are too lazy to pull off the stickers.

Enough with my rant, I'm done. I despise Best Buy.

I had something similar happen to me at the old Bradlees many years ago. My son loved Legos, so I was looking for the latest big set for Christmas. I was thrilled to find a big sign that said all Lego sets were 50% off. So I got one of the biggest sets and went to check out. The price came up as the regular price. So I told her that they should be 50% off as the sign said. She argued with me so I asked for the manager. She went back as said "Oh that sign shouldn't be there. That was from last week". I said, "Well, that's not my problem. The sign IS there and I WILL get 50% off. I was a mean old broad even then. So the manager told the cashier to give me 50% off. Well, the girl gave me 50% off and then 50% off that total! She was so mad at me for making a stink about the price I guess she didn't think what she was doing. To top it off, I got a rebate back too. LOL

Feralpeg, I had a store try to do that to me with the sale price thing. They wouldn't honor it the next day, so I brought the item back, returned it, and after the girl had finished doing the whole return thing, I said "Now I'd like to buy it back at today's sale price".

The look on her face...priceless.

This has happened to me too, at Macy's. I had gone to the Christmas department to see if I could find some decorations on sale since it was after Christmas. I saw a beautiful metal-ish gold star tree topper and noticed that they were included in the 50% off sale. There was a big sign on a pole, so it could be moved around (it came in handy!). The cashier rang the topper up for full price and I told him it was on sale, he said tree toppers were not included. So, I went to the sign and dragged it over to show him and he had no choice but to give it to me for 50% off.

I had something similar happen at a CompUSA. A game I wanted that was regularly 39.99 was listed as 19.99. When I got to the checkout, it rang up at the regular price. The sales person was giving me a "sucks to be you, now pay full price attitude". I was just going to put the game back, but there was a manager nearby who overheard the exchange. He asked me to show him the display. When I showed him, he said it was a store mistake and someone there had printed the price wrong. He thanked me for making them aware of it and told the clerk to ring the game up at the lower price. That's good customer service :D

While it's great that they honored that for you (as they should), the way you were treated should have been taken to the customer service department. That is no way to treat a customer.
