Falling back on your friends Super Goofs September thread

Good luck with your new beginning, Maura. You're about to embark on a great adventure, I'm sure. I loved your Indiana Jones analogy, by the way.

Suzanne, sorry to hear you're having work drama. We recently had a bit ourselves, and I keep thinking if only we could get health insurance for my family for less than $11,000/year (our most recent quote), I would quit and free up my job for someone who actually wants it.

Meanwhile, I've been having some foot/orthotic/shoe issues. Can't they all just get along? I noticed that I was actually using the outside of my foot during the DL Half. Weird feeling for a lifelong pronator, and I guess it means the new orthotics are working. Trouble is, that part of my foot became bruised and swollen, and the 11 hours we toured the parks after the race didn't help with my recovery. It finally started feeling a bit better yesterday, so I did 4 miles and now the bruising and swelling are back. It's so frustrating, especially since I have a full marathon schedule on my bulletin board mocking me every time I skip a run!

Hi Goofs!

Today was my second run in the rain. I hate running in the rain but I hate treadmills more. I am at the point in my training where the runs are just too long to run on a treadmill.

Kim - RICE! RICE! RICE! With extra ice. Once you get swollen feet it takes quite a bit of REAL rest and elevation to get back to normal.

Maura - Don't you just love those good runs? Especially when you did all the miles. Way to go!

Steve - I have known a couple runners that used the elipitical when they had injuries and they werre able to jump back into running with much more ease than the people that used bikes or swam. Hang in there, you'll be running in no time.

Suzanne - I hope the work situation gets better. Grapes are definately better than cookies unless they are fermented.

Take Care ALL!
Cecilia

Grapes are definately better than cookies unless they are fermented.
And that's when they become WAY better than cookies! ;) Seriously, though, great stress snack choice, Suzanne.

Thanks for the advice. It's been hard to "really" rest and to elevate, but I've been doing ice, NSAIDs and compression and I'm feeling MUCH better today. I'd been feeling really worried so I asked our TNT coaches just how late is "too late" for me to resume training. They said that I shouldn't panic until we're 10-11 weeks out. I'm so glad to have "permission" to rest until I'm fully healed, and it seems like that gave my healing a jump start. It's amazing how much better it feels today.

Boy, I'm behind!

Liz - Hope your back is feeling better!

Steve - Sorry about the knee. I'm constantly battling knee pain. I injured it during my first half and it hasn't been the same since. I use one of those Cho Pat dual action knee straps. Wednesday I forgot to put it on and it started hurting midrun, so I guess it does help? Anyway, I hope it heals for you soon!

Joanne - I hear ya about going to the PT. It gets expensive! My copay was even more. I finally gave up cause it was costing a fortune and I didn't see a difference. I got a steroid shot in my shin instead of a cortisone shot. I wish he would have done cortisone instead like you. I notice I now have a dent in my shin where the shot was. Seems weird to me?!? Anyway, good luck on your relay! I'm very curious about your R2/W2. I have decided to do Galloway, too and I'm doing a R3/W1. I thought maybe it would help since I'm so injury prone. I'm trying to keep my overall pace under 12:00, but it is really hard. Can you tell me what pace you are averaging during your run and walks portions? I just can't figure it out.

Suzanne - Oh, I can't wait to hear how your 5K goes with your daughter! Please let us know. My youngest is doing a Run Girls Run program at school and we're doing the Make A Wish 5K next month. I was gonna sign up my older daughter, too. She doesn't run, but swims ALOT. I think she has better endurance than all of us. I was wondering if I could pull off a R/W with her...

Cecilia - What can I say? You rock! And I'm like you, all this rain we've had I'd still rather run out in it then run on the treadmill!

Maura - Congrats on your 8 miles!

Megan - Congrats on your 7!

Kim - Hope you get your shoe issues straightened out and things start feeling better.

MIKE - CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing new here to report. Did 4 miles this morning doing a R3/W1 with a 12:19 pace. Hoping to run the TOT 13K under a 12:00 pace so I've got to kick it up some. Knee and shin are holding on. Icing after every run. Trying to lose some of these pounds I gained during my stressful months I had. Starting to get things wrapped up, with the exception of one big cloud hanging over me. Hopefully, I'll be able to put this mess behind me in early October. Almost there...

Hope all my fellow Goofs have a nice weekend!

First, PD to all who need it, congrats to all who earned it!

My PC's motherboard went down, so I'm on a barely functional laptop...I'll check in as I can, but unfortunately won't be able to be on much until I get a new PC built.

I'm still specing out parts, so it might be a couple of weeks...

:(

Could someone please put 14:32:20 on the september 13th goofs spreadsheet along with 281.2 miles?

Thank you...I'll miss you guys.

Hello Super Goofs!!!!

Long time no talk for me!

I got married 3 weeks ago on what was the best day of my life!!! Since the wedding planning is over, I can now get back into my training for the Goofy. The scary part is that I haven't even started yet....YIKES!!! :scared1:

I know I will be fine because I did the same thing last year, but I was hoping to do better this year. We shall see how that goes! I will be back on more often now that I have more free time. Someone will have to remind me how to get on to the spreadsheet so I can add miles as I start to do some!

Mike--Congrats on being an Ironman! Anyone who can do that is truly an inspiration to me!

Maura--Sorry to hear about the job situation....but I hope you enjoy your time off. I have always told myself that if I stop loving what I do, I will walk away. (Let's hope I never feel that way!) Good for you for taking that step..enjoy the new adventures!

Cecilia--looks like your training is going very well! I can only dream about doing 20 milers that fast! Great job!

Suzanne-Glad to hear your daughter is running some races with you..that is so cool!

To all those with nagging injuries...take care of them and feel better!

Ok Super Goofs...this time I really hope to be around more, I miss the boards!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

I'll have to check out those knee straps Shan. I asked my PT and she said she doesn't think I need any kind of braces or support right now as she wants me to build up slowly. I think I will use something during my half marathon next month though.

This was my first full week of being a gym member. I took my first spinning class on Thursday and LOVED it. The instructor was awesome as well. She actually used to be my DD's gymnastics teacher so we had a little catching up to do. She was great about not letting me overdo it on my knee. As she was telling the class to do more intense things, she would then say to me what I should to do customize it to get a good workout and keep my heart rate up without going too rough on my knee. I'm really excited about going back twice a week during lunch.

I also did the elliptical which was pretty fun. It's a type I haven't seen before that is a free range of motion unlike the kind that are on a wheel. You can use it as a stairmaster or elliptical and fits your natural range of motion. It was also nice that it had a TV on it. I've done that twice now and it gave my knee no problems. I'll try to do this 3-4x per week.

I just spent the MOST AMAZING 24 hours in my LIFE! I had such a blast I am going to sign up again next year. 200 miles in 24 hours- can anyone think of a better way- sore muscles, no sleep, and the SMELL of unwashed and sweaty bodies X 6!
I ended up running 3 legs for a total of 19 miles- I feel great minus one toenail but no big tendonitis issues. Talk about hills- yikes!

So for the spreadsheet- it is my total or the teams :)

Congrats Joanne! Sounds like fun!

Laurie, congrats again on your wedding! I saw some of the pics, you were beautiful!

Steve, the brace just kinda gives you a little support. Try one out for your LRs. I won't tell your PT. ;) You can find them online fairly cheap.

Just a quick FYI- our team ended up finishing in 174 place out of 400 with an average time of....8:14 per mile!!! (Most of the guys were doing 5-6 minute miles- gulp!) I brought the average down but I still had fun! Not bad for a team who's goal was just to finish!

Very cool and congrats!!

Hey Goofs. You would not believe this weather we're having in Atlanta. We're safely inside, they let the middle schoolers come home early today and both swim practice and gymnastics have been canceled. Looking forward to Dancing with the Stars tonight as long as we get a satellite signal! Lots of flooding everywhere, Cecilia are you OK over there? We're near Noonday Creek and it is about even with the bridge by our house now. Scary stuff and looks like rain all week!

Regardless, DH and I managed a three mile run this morning. :lmao: I think that is the hardest rain I've ever run in. It was kinda fun, though. For one, I got to run with DH which is becoming kinda rare these days. Two, I ran without taking any walk breaks (first time since the Peachtree) and I ran kinda fast trying to get back home before another round of lightening started. Nothing like lightening to motivate you to run faster. :rotfl:

Shan, Cecilia and any other Atlanta folks - be careful out there!! Seen some scary images of the flooding.

Two streets my neighborhood is off of are now partially closed. And DH is at work. UGH!

Cecilia, Cobb County schools are closed tomorrow now. Are you in that county?

Hey there Goofs!! I got in a 2 mile run today, and had to stop due to some pain in my foot. I stubbed my big toe really bad the other day and it is really sore. I am hoping it will feel better tomorrow or the next day.

To all our Atlanta friends---stay safe! And try to stay dry. I have seen some pics and the flooding is crazy.

Laurie Good to see you back and congrats on your wedding. I hope it was everything you wanted it to be and worth all the work!

Joanne Congrats on your relay! And here you were all worried about not being able to keep up. You guys must be speedy. I'm not sure I could manage 8:14 for more than a few miles.

Cecilia and Shan I hope you two are doing well and your weather gets saner soon.

Steve Glad to see you're having fun with your cross training.

Suzanne Hi! Hope work is going okay.

As for me....In the adjustment phase of my new life. Trying to figure out what kind of daily schedule will be best. Got the gym schedule and will try to plan around taking some new XT classes. So I better get cracking and go off to run my speedwork!

Maura

Hey Goofs,
I could use some pixie dust. I've got some nasty chest cold (and have for the last couple days). No fever or anything, but it is really cutting into my running. Normally, this would not be a huge deal, but (until I got sick), I had a really good chance of busting a PR at RFTT, but losing a key week of training at this point has really done wonders for my self-confidence.

Good job, everyone - I'll read them all later, but I am off to make something warm and comforting to drink, to see if that helps.
