Falling back on your friends Super Goofs September thread

not sure if it is all in my head but I now have way more energy! I have been using a whey protein powder mixed with soy milk. I have been taking this three times a day- pre and post run plus before bed. My legs feel great! I even did a 8.5 minute mile today on the treadmill! I put the ipod all the way up (which I cannot do on the streets) and it shuffled to Fight the Power! Too fun but I am not sure where the song came from!

I also think my new found energy is from my new pony! I always referred to riding as my therapy!

I did a quick 5 miles yesterday without my training partner- Bella Buttercup. She is having problems with her hip and struggles on the 2 mile runs.

Today I did a few miles on the treadmill, fitness yoga, and I dragged my poor GG#2 on a bike ride. I bribed her with ice cream if she would come with me and not complain. Poor thing- we did 30 miles! I am so proud of her.

I also had a moment of "what the heck am I thinking". A member of Run for the Memory (Alzheimer's Association) was injured and will be unable to run for the Reach the Beach relay. It is a race done by teams of 10- 2 days to run 200 miles. I said I would fill in! I am super excited and super nervous- you are only as strong as your weakest player- I fear it will be me but I am really excited!

Hey Goofs!

Joanne: Glad to hear your legs are feeling better. Good luck on your upcoming race...how is it split up between team members? Do you have to run all of your 20 mi at once?

7 mi for me today...I was dragging at first, but some friends brought water out and I felt much better after hydrating.

Today:

2000 yard open water swim, about 50 minutes.

30 hilly miles, about two hours.

6.5 mile run, about 60 minutes.

drove home, took a nap, posted here.

And that is my day so far!

Mike

Since I am filling in at the last minute the team leader said he would give me an easier run- not sure what this means!

I finally got my TnT webpage set up...check out my training blog by clicking on the link in my signature.

Happy Sunday of a long weekend Goofs! :goodvibes

Fireworks in store for tonight with a pot luck dinner at SIL. Tomorrow is the parade in town. My son has his mini brat (small go cart that DH won when he was 10) all washed and ready to go. The A is ailing again and won't fire. Hoping that DH just flooded it and I can get it going today!

I have 7 miles on for today. Trying to work back up to my 9 mile Sunday run again. Having a hard time not focusing on the fact that I am missing VAB this weekend and keeping the eye on the 10K just a short month away. It's hard not thinking about VAB when our high temp for the day is about 60 and the fireworks will be in a jacket tonight. Summer is over here...officially...:guilty:

I will be updating the sheet shortly with my September miles so I will update the first post with the August miles to date. Thanks everyone for keeping on without me. Hoping this will end soon too...:sad2:

Shannon, safe travels.

Joanne, give Bella a hug from me. She is such a super sweet doggie, sad that she is having hip problems. I always called my horses therapy too. Sometimes I miss them a lot...:sad1:

Everyone else, keep up the GREAT work!! :yay:

Hi Goofs!

Its Monster Month at my house and all my kids know it. Only one spent a single night of this weekend at home and he had three friends to reinforce him!

Monster month is Dh and I's term for the month before you start tamper. Your miles are peaking. Your legs are aching. Your mind is starting to panic. Your moods are starting to swing from "maybe I'll pr" to "I'll never finish". You start to feel "phantom" aches and pains. Get the picture?

Actually, I think I am handling the mileage much better than I do for the Disney races. Monster month for Disney starts at Thanksgiving and runs through Christmas which has a few good points and alot of bad points. Because we boosted our training earlier in the summer, I am much stronger at this point than I have ever been for prior races. We'll see how things go.

Saturday I ran a 14 miler, all hills, with a steady 10 minute mile pace. Thats my goal for Chicago. Well, actually, any pace under a 10:39 will make me happy but a 10:00 would feel like I won. I dream big.

Joanne - glad to hear you have more energy whatever the reason!
Lisa - You've been getting some good runs in. Keep in up, I know with your schedule its pretty tough to get them in.

Cecilia

Hi Goofs! Good to see everyone is getting their training in when they can...I know this is a very busy time of year for most.

3 mi for me today.

Hey Goofs!!

Not much going on here. LTO big time so just back to kicking it into gear!

I did update the sheet for both Patrick and myself.

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend.

Guess what, Goofs? I'm now a Coast to Coast medalist and owner of a new PR to boot! Will write more later; just wanted to take a brief mental health break from work for a minute.

OMG!! It's September already!!!! I'll be back tonight.

Hello!
So I ended up signing up for that Labor Day 10K anyway the day before the race. (I had been debating since I injured myself and got sick last weekend.) I woke up earlier than I wanted Labor Day having like an anxiety attack because I knew I wasn't trained enough to be running those hills. (It turns out there was a sane reason to be worried. :lmao: )

The hills were killer! OMG! I walked up most of the inclines. Toughest course I've ever done for sure. Ended up with my slowest 10K time ever, but ya know what? I was happy to know I could do a 10K on such a tough course with so little preparation. And the best part is my knee and shin held up! :thumbsup2

Anyway, my time was 1:15:31 according to them. My Garmin showed 1:13:33. I think that is a pretty big difference. I hate to say this, but I'm getting tired of putting myself in back when nobody else bothers to read the race instructions. I spent a good portion of the start trying to maneuver around people walking. Plus, there was only a timing mat at the finish, not at the start. So I'm guessing my clock started ticking when the gun went off. So next race I'm moving my booty up closer.

Race was actually bigger than I thought. They had parachuters fly in carrying the flag while we sang. I thought that was pretty cool. Then at the finish they had a Beatles tribute band that was great. We stayed and listened to them play a couple sets. We also could have gotten into the water park at the finish for free, but since the girls weren't with us and we had season passes over the summer we just skipped it.

Oh, and they had an inline skate race, bicycle race, wheelchair race and balance walking?!? Has anyone seen that before? Walking poles on the road?!? They even gave out medals for that. I had just never seen that before!

Shocked at the amount of people I saw hoarding food like there was no tomorrow. Kinda put me off. I grabbed my banana and water bottle and was quite happy, thank you. I seriously saw people taking their shirts and filling it up with food. Incredible.

DH rocked! He totally conquered those hills like it was nothing. All those trail runs he does I guess paid off. He was one of the first 1,000 so he got a medal. I did not. :confused3:lmao:

OK, so then today I officially signed up DH and myself for TOT 13K. We've had our room reserved for awhile, but I was so on the fence. Worried about my slower pace these days, my injuries... No excuses now. I'm in! :yay:

Hope everyone else had a great holiday weekend!

Kim Yeah for your PR! Can't wait to hear more details. I would really like to do this race next year.

Shan Great job. So glad you didn't have any shin problems. And glad you are getting to go to the TOT. I have to keep myself from being stupid and flying down for that 2 weeks after RFTT. The lure of the final medal is strong, but the glare my DH owuld give me if I suggested it is stronger!

As for me, start my official marathon training plan this week. And did the Mackinac Bridge run on Monday-it was great. Posted on the race thread.

My big news is that I am leaving GM, after 24 years. I have decided that I need to find something to do that I can be passionate about and really enjoy. I have no current plans, but will get 6 months severance, since I am "volunteering" to go. Others will not be so lucky. I feel like Indiana Jones in the Last Crusade when he had to take the "leap of faith" before he finally got to the Holy Grail. He put his hand over his heart, closed his eyes and stepped out into the abyss. Fortunately, he made it. I hope to do the same.

Maura

WOW Maura, that's a huge change!! Good for you though, sounds like you're ready to make a change and aren't afraid to do it (I'm such a wuss, I wouldn't have the guts!)

Good luck Maura!

I've finally updated my miles, including August since that was still up. My training is getting more serious now so my miles will be increasing greatly. I got in a very nice 4 miles last night, another 4 tomorrow and 4-6 on Sunday. I've got the Philly Distance Run on 9/20! Woohoo!

Kim and Shan - WTG!!!

Maura - good luck on your new adventure!

Big HELLO to everyone!

Not much going on around here. Training is slow as I hurt my back few weeks ago and although better, I've managed to aggravate it several times. Going to Madison this weekend to volunteer and cheer on Mike and Matt for the IM. I've got RFTT on tap, couple local 5ks, still working on the du for end of Oct.

Oh and I signed up to do a stair climb up the Sears Tower in Nov. http://www.skyrisechicago.org/ Need to raise $100 as well for the charity but figure that should be easy.

I hope everyone had a nice Labor Day weekend! We took DD3 camping for her first time and we all had a great time.

Shan - Great job!

Kim - Great job to you too. Hopefully by this time next year I'll be able to say I'm a Coast to Coast medalist as well!

Maura - Best of luck with your pursuits!

Liz - Good luck with the stair climb. I know a lady who did that and thought it was a great experience. The pictures of people who finished it looked like they had just been through a marathon!

AFM, I ran 10M last week and reaggravated my knee. Third time was the charm and I finally decided to go see my doctor. I'm starting physical therapy on Friday with someone who specializes in running. Fortunately it's nothing serious but with my first marathon coming up in January, I need to make sure I do what I need to build back up so I can get those long training runs in. I can't seem to do anything longer than 30 min now and still be able to walk the rest of the day. We'll see! I have a half in November I won't miss but another half in October I'm on the fence about. I may go easy and just do the 5K.

I also just added on to my wife's gym membership. I'm looking forward to doing some lunchtime classes at the location near my office. I also look forward to getting good use out of their pool to start my tri training after the Mickey.

Hey Goofs, hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend. For most of you, it means fall is on the way but here in Florida, the temps might drop a degree or two, maybe.

We are in the 3rd week of school and I still can't get my schedule straight, my inner clock is not cooperating. By the time I get it figured out, it will be summertime again!

I signed up for a 5K at the end of the month and my daughter and I are walking a 5K in October for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. This will be her first walk and I am very excited to be sharing this experience with her! I am trying to do alittle fundraising for the event and not having much luck. Anyone with experience in that department? I know times are tough for many but I didn't think I would have no response from over 100 people. Any suggestions?

ETA...thanks Angie for the donation. I will submit one for you tomorrow!

Congrats to everyone on their recent races and workouts.

Can't wait to see Maura, Lisa, Liz and anyone else coming down for Race for the Taste, only about 30 days to go!!! Looks like the meet will be at the Boardwalk Bakery on Saturday at 4:30pm. I should be there.
