A friend said I MUST buy a replica watch, like a fake Rolex or Omega. Looked them up - they start at £150 and go up. Problems - importing fakes to the UK is hazardous, many are seized and destroyed by Customs. Second, for a lot less than that, I can get a nice, handsome fashion watch. Next, I couldn't wear a fake luxury watch out on the town - I'd be mugged for it! Finally, would I appreciate it? Probably not… it's a fake! Don't think I'll be investing!

Interesting fact: my dear dad floated a watch factory in China on the stock exchange! They make 85% of all watches (or at least, did, a few years ago) in the world in China, same factories, different brands. Interesting fact - the workers can't even look up at visitors, unless they break concentration.

Agree with you that I would rather have a nice normal watch instead of a fake. I'm not a big watch person though so I am probably the wrong person to ask.

While I agree that you are better off from a value standpoint getting a solid fashion watch over a fake Rolex, I don’t have a problem with the fakes so long as they are upfront about being fake and don’t try to con people into thinking they are the real thing. For example, don’t put Rolex (or Rollex or Rolexx) on the watch face. If you take your time, you could probably find a normal fashion watch that resembles a Rolex in style if you wanted to.

I have jewelry and handbags that look like they are much more expensive than they are, but have never claimed to be designer pieces. I wear them in public and if someone wanted to rob me, they could have them. At least I would not be out several thousand dollars. The mugger would probably go after my phone first though . . . and that would hurt in more ways than one.

Get a Hamilton or Seiko if that is more in your budget. Fake watches are not the vibe.

I agree get what’s in your budget that is not fake for the brand. From your other posts it seems like you collect low value watches, is this the case?

Yup, developed a real taste for them - verging on a problem! I've managed to identify a few brand names that are good for decent quality but low cost time pieces - and other names to steer well clear from! I do have some more expensive watches but to be honest, the difference in finish between them and the cheaper watches these days is minimal.

Actually, contradicting myself, I can actually see the point… not every luxury watch has a fashion, cheaper watch equivalent and whilst I'm pretty dismissive of many luxury models, style wise, some are actually very comely. I just saw a LOVELY Patek Philippe watch but don't have the thousands it takes to own one. Replica watches makes that possible.
