Hi friends--here is the latest update from Dawn's husband--thankfully better news than yesterday:
Good morning all,
The were not any crashes last night!! She remained stable, and is still stable this morning. What the focus is now on is getting her in a position for a CT brain scan. The condition of her brain brings a third, and quite frankly more distressing, option to the table other than life or death. To have the scan done they need to stabilize her further so that she is not hooked up to so many machines. Once they are able to move her she can have the scan. This morning they started working to that end. They shut down the drug and machine that was regulating her blood pressure. So far she has been able to maintain a good pressure on her on. If that continues today, then they will see what else they can shut down. This will be a trial and error process until they can learn what she absolutely has to be hooked up to for the trip to the scanner. The given is the incubation machine. The other consideration is the H1N1. Now that the cultures are picking up her strain, she still is at 47 out of 50 on the infection scale.
Needless to say her quarantine continues.
I have received a lot of questions about the oxygen deprivation due to my comments about what happened when she crashed the other night. It is true that when she dislodged the ventilator tubes her saturation dropped to almost nothing instantly. The crash team was on top of her within seconds and had her reventilated with 100% oxygen within minutes. This was dramatic and a dangerous situation that may have caused brain damage. However, if there is damage to the brain it will be more likely caused by the six days of not being able to absorbed oxygen through her lungs. The brain, I have been told, needs a 92% saturation level to be healthy. Even though they are feeding her 100% oxygen, her lungs were only absorbing in the 45-60% range for days. Even today, which is the best day ever on absorption, she is at 81%. The good news is that these are just numbers. Every person is different and can tolerate different levels. They have had some patients with numbers like these that have been just fine.
So the good news is that she had a good night, she is stable. On a personal note, I am off quarantine. I was able to have a family meeting with Cullen and Emily last night which was wonderful. Today, I have left the hospital for a few minutes and actually went into Home Depot to pick up a part. I cannot tell you how marvelous it was to just stand there and have people milling all around me. I guess I had a really goofy grin on my face or me telling too many people hi caused concern because security started following me around. Even that was fun.
Thank you all for your emails, texts, and calls. Your thoughts and prayers have been wonderful!
