We are going to the County Fair today. I am so not looking forward to it. I hate big fairs. And we have to go with MIL. I just want to stay home!

It seems like the exact same stuff, year after year, and ride prices that make Disney look like a bargain! It is smelly, crowded, dirty, people smoke, someone always gets food poisoning from the food every year.

We have a much nicer little one that comes also, it is sooo much nicer, not so many people and I feel good about supporting 4-H and stuff.

Oh, why can't I just stay home!

Do you like local fairs?

NO!

Our friends complain about Disney prices but love the local fair. Our cash burn arte is twice what it is at Disney at the fair.

No more fairs for me. Humbug!

(That felt good!)

look at all the ride accidents throughout the years. Notice the terrible fatalities and alarmingly large amounts of them that took place at traveling carnivals.

I avoid them, they skeeve me out. Unsafe, and a horrible atmosphere.

Evil Princess I am with you. The following was taken from the link you gave:
Boy, 8, dies from bumper car ride injury
(Wednesday, August 13, 2003) - An 8-year-old boy has died from injuries he suffered on a bumper car ride last month at the Lake County Fair in Ohio. The boy was severely shocked when he touched a pole on a bumper car ride called the Scooter.

This is my dh's cousin little boy. It was a horrible accident. He went into cardiac arrest and they brought him back but he was brain dead then died. I stay away. I like to go to fairs and etc but avoid the traveling rides.

Our Fair is going on now also.
I don't do the rides there!!!!!

I like going early in the morning and leave around noon!
That way I can see the exhibits and things without a hugh crowd!

I used to like carnivals but lately I've come to feel rather uncomfortable at them...I don't feel safe and the atmosphere isn't very good at all...plus some of the carnival workers (I'm not going to stereotype them and say all of them...but many I have encountered) smoke and were...well, freaks.

I much prefer amusement parks like Disney and Universal where it is more professional and clean...and enjoyable.

that said, I don't attend county or church fairs anymore.

Heck No...I have worked so many fairs and carnivals over the years I avoid them like the plague. Something about spending hours upon hours at these things seeing the same people every night isn't my cup of tea anymore. Gotta love the "fresh country air" too

Good, now I don't feel so bad. I was thinking there was something wrong with me for not enjoying myself and not letting my kids on any of the rides. It was as yucky as I thought it would be! I had to shower when I got home.

Anyway, we are off to the World in less than a month! Lots of way cooler rides there!

I hate when my daughter wants to go to them, I get the feeling half the people that work at them might be criminals

I used to go to fairs a lot when I was a teenager but I always felt uncomfortable too, I never felt unsafe on the rides, it was the people who worked there that made me feel weird. I've had a lot of very creepy encounters at the different fairs and festivals we have here. The last couple of times I went I had big male friends with me so I it was a better experience. I haven't been in a few years and don't really care if I ever go to another one.

I don't believe I've ever been to one. My kids and SO went to one last year with my brother and SIL. They both said they'd never go to a fair ever again. They both got sick on some of the rides.

Well, I admit to loving carnivals when i was younger...there was one ride, a while back where you were stapped in this boat like ride and it went upside down...I doubt rides like that are even around anymore, because of safety...at least I haven't seen any like that in years.

I never realized there were so many accidents at fairs...if I did, being as paranoid as I am, I probably wouldn't have wanted to go back. Now I just need to get over the possibility of a roller coaster derailment...

Those rides are still around, and they are safe when in respectable places that check their rides every morning. It's when you get the rides at traveling carnivals, that are built and rebuilt many times throughout the year, without proper safety checks that you have the safety problems. :)
