I applied for a FairFX card for my Mum online as she is no good with computers! Trouble is, I stupidly put my surname instead of hers, and we didn't notice until the card landed on her doormat. :headache:

I e-mailed FairFX who said they could send out a card with a new name on but it would cost $12. Can anyone tell me if it really matters if the name is wrong? Do you sign for the card when you use it in the US or just use a PIN? Do they ever ask for ID? DM has loaded $40 onto it, but does not want to load any more until she knows it is safe to use.

She has not phoned to validate the card yet, but we have had it for about a week.

Can anyone offer any advice?

You do sign for your card in the US and although you dont usually get asked for ID, there is nothing stopping a merchant from requesting it.

I would say yes, it DOES matter if it is in the wrong name. If it had been in her maiden name or a name she has previously been known by, no problem but I wouldn't want to take that chance.

Of course SHE has to sign the back and that is the signature that needs to match the one at the cash point, but I would pay the £12 if it came to that.

Or cancel the card, get refunded the money on it and apply for another one if she has time to do that.

I know someone this happened to and if she pays in say disneyworld or universal shops or resturants they will not ask for id. If she only has $40 I would just order another one. My friend did a simple cross and line as anyones signature can be anything so for $40 I wouldnt worry. In the malls and with high amounts of shopping they may well ask for id .Iv only been asked if paying with dollarcheques not card.

I have been asked for ID when using my Fairfx card but it is normally only when you purchase $50 or more in one transaction.....therefore if it was me I would get another card in the correct name & load that with the rest of the $'s but also keep the incorrect card with $40 on & spend it in one or two transactions. :thumbsup2

Sounds like a good idea to me! :thumbsup2

Yes, me too! Thanks for your replies. Will validate this one and order a 'proper' one!

Just get your mum to sign her usual signature on both cards then she won't get confused. :thumbsup2

They will check to see the signature matches but won't check it matches the name printed on the front for such a small purchased amount. :)

I think you can still get a free card via Matalan so I would order a new one that way and use the other one to draw out the cash in dollars out there:cool1:
