It is that time of year again...County Fair time! :goodvibes Now, I know that most co. fairs are a little on the redneck side, but I must admit, I love it and I especially love the contests! I am a nerd like that! ::yes::

I entered 4 items in my fair...

A decorated cake
Cupcakes
A photo of DS
Scrapbook

I won first place for the cake and the cupcakes, second for the scrapbook, and first/reserve grand champion for the photo!

There is one more competiton Sunday, I am entering creme brulee cupcakes! :thumbsup2 Send some pixie dust my way, there is a great cash prize for that one! :goodvibes

Way to go! Congratulations!!!

care to share your award winning recipes??

good luck this weekend!

Congratulations!!!! :cool1:
Where do you all live that you have these great county fairs? We have ony 1 big one here in MA -the Eastern States Exposition, or the Big E, which is held in September.

Nan and I both are Hoosiers, living in the land of corn. County fairs are big here. I was going to enter the state fair this year, but there is an overall $30 contestant fee and then an individual fee for each item you enter. Granted the prizes are bigger, but still...not my cup of tea at this time.

Way to go!!! Congrats!!!!

The kids brought home all blues!!! DS10 got Honors for his woodworking (candlestick holders) and DD got Honors for her gift wrapping.

Our fair is wrapping up this weekend... The kids went last night and said they have been releasing the animals early due to the extreme heat index... Had some animals go home sick.. I must say the 4-H exhibitors and parents and fair board are doing a great job of making sure the animals are cooled, feed, watered, walked... no one has been taking the heat/heat index as a joke...

Tonight we are going to the 4-H auction.... We don't buy but we love to go watch and eat!!!

The cake was judged solely on decoration. I made a witch's calderon with lots of sculpted fondant "goodies" floating in the brew like a finger, an eyeball, and an ear. Beside the calderon I sculpted 2 fondant frogs, one wearing a witches hat. If I would have thought about it, I would have put Harry Potter glasses on the second frog, but I did not think about it until last night.

The cupcakes were a red velvet recipe dyed blue instead of red with a cream cheese frosting, a large dollop of cheesecake, and toffee pieces incrusted all around the sides. I topped each of those with a sculpted fondant bulldog and called them "Butler Blue Velvet Pupcakes". I use my own recipes for things and since I am trying to start a cake business I do not share them, but if you google any basic red velvet cake recipe you will get something similar to what I used. ;)

Thanks! I found a recipe that I liked and I have just changed it and added my own twists to create new flavors based on that recipe. When I get picture loaded I will post a picture. It has been so hot that the fondant was melting already last night and it was only opening night! I bet they get tossed by mis next week. :upsidedow

The creme brulee cupcake recipe is not mine. I found it at Beantown Baker. She has some great ideas on her site. :goodvibes

just took a quick look....they look so yummy! I've never made my own batter, just box, this will be fun! thanks for sharing the site!

Buff - I have driven through some of those towns on the way to the beach, but never heard anything about county fairs. When do they hold them?
I even live in a town, but the only fair they hold here you drove through on your way to NY. Always 4 days preceding the 4th of July - never any home-made goods or crafts. That would be awesome.

Congrats to the kiddos!!! We were okay out at the fairgrounds last night. It actually got hotter as it got darker. :scared1:
