Failed Root Canal?

I had a double root canal on two of my top front teeth on Monday. Everything went great during the procedure and I was a little bit sore the days following, but today I am having alot of pain. Any type of pressure on my tooth is causing alot of pain. Any biting with it, or even when my toungue pushes on the tooth when I am talking or if I am chewing on a different side of my mouth, if my top tooth hits a bottom tooth it is painful.

I called my dentist and he said it is sometimes normal for this to happen, but he did sound like it could be something wrong, and told me to take advil for a few more days and call back.

I am first wondering if this sounds like a failed Root Canal? Also if it is and its something that the dentist did wrong or didn't do correctly, do they redo the root canal/fix it for free or do I have to pay more money to have it fixed?

I had terrible pain after my root canal (even eating soft bread was terribly painful). Mine was in a molar though. The fix was as simple as adjusting the crown (which was temporary at that point) because it threw my bite off. The crown was "higher" than my old tooth had been, so all the pressure from chewing was on that one spot which very quickly flared up. Not sure if the same thing could happen with a front tooth though.

Even with my permanent crown, I still had some pain. Dentist filed it, adjusted bite several times. I was really worried that I did that whole root canal for nothing. Finally, she replaced the crown (for free). The fit on the first one just wasn't right. Now it is fine.

I had a root canal and the pain would not go away. It was so bad that I ended up going to the emergency room the next evening because I couldn't take the pain. It turned out that it took a long time for the infection underneath to calm down because the dentist broke off one of those little pins in my gums and left it there! I had to go to a very expensive specialist to fix the root canal and to get the little pin out. That does not sound normal to me-If the dentist is telling you to "wait out the pain", I'd be asking to see another dentist.

I have had dentists treat this different ways as far as cost. I would think that since it is so close they would not charge you more.

Sounds awful! I am sorry you are so uncomfortable.

In my experience with my front tooth that had to have a root canal, as soon as I came off the nvacaine my tooth was killing me. I went back to the dentist to find out that I have 2 nerve endings in my front teeth and most people only have 1. I felt so much better after they removed the second one.

I have since had another root canal and this time they found what is called pulp stones in the tooth. I really am a pain for dentists.

Thank you everyone. I am gonna call the dentist again this morning and hopefully be able to get in today to see him. I am just not comfortable letting this go any longer.

If the pain was less and then became worse I would be concerned about infection. If you are on antibiotics, maybe it's fine to wait and see if it can clear up, but if not I'd definately ask about the possibility of an infection. I've had a lot of dental work (get braces off Monday!) and it's always been most pain the first day after the procedure and then lessening each day after. I did have a root canal that followed that pattern. But, an infection could be placing pressure on nearby nerve ending in your jaw.

This happens to me with Root Canals and plain fillings. With my last RC I had to get a perscription pain medication it was so bad. My dentist told me the tooth was "angry" from all the work going on. It took about 2 weeks before the pain was completely gone.

Good Luck :)

Hello,
The root canal system of your tooth can be complex. One of the most common reasons for failed endodontic treatment is that there is an extra canal in the tooth beyond what would normally be expected. Lower incisors, which are "supposed to" have only one canal, can have a second, hidden canal hidden behind the first one. Molars with three roots can have four canals. If the extra canal isn't found, it will eventually become infected and there will be treatment failure, resulting in a tooth abscess.

thanks!!

Give it some time, but root canals can fail. I had mine done twice (yes, I had to pay for the second procedure plus for the new crown) and my tooth still hurt. No dentist could figure out why it was still hurting. Finally 10 years after the first procedure, I just had the tooth pulled and no more pain. Now I'm getting an implant (more $$$!)

Thank you everyone. I went back to the dentist yesterday. He said that my "bite" was irritating my root canal that hadn't yet healed, so it was just staying inflamed. He filed my tooth down a bit and it was so much better yesterday. He said I was most likely grinding my teeth at night and it was causing most of the pain. I woke up this morning in alot of pain again. This just really stinks. I am hoping that it will just get better over time. I have to go back at the end of the month to get 2 more root canals and then I have to get a total of 4 crowns.

The best thing to do is to wait jus a few more days and to see what you are feeling and if there is further pain. Be careful about others experiences because it may lead you to think things are worst than they are.

I would doubt that they would do another procedure for free, even if it is corrective.
