Does anyone have anything they would suggest? She is 10, almost 11 and has gone through puberty already and her face is really breaking out. We have tried Clinique but it is not working or maybe the product we have is not working. Any suggestions? She is so worried about it and embarrassed of course.

My son (16) tried everything. Nothing worked. I would just go ahead and take her to a dermatologist which is what we ended up doing.

Ditto the dermatologist! We just took my 2 year old son in to have a wart removed off his finger (it covered his entire fingertip and he was chewing on it - ewww...) and I actually had a long discussion with the dermatologist about teen acne. She said she LOVES when teens come to her first before trying every product on the market as they have so many mild and effective prescription medications these days.

I'm excited to know that as given our genetics, my bio boys are in for some bad skin days when they hit puberty.

I agree with the Dermo, teenage acne can be painfull and serious. As a teenager I has cystic acne that required acutane (heavy drug). My mom had me try EVERY over the counter and some perscription drug before they found something that worked. going to a Dermo is the best way before spending more money on something that might not work

Now as an adult I get them with stress BUT I have found that MaryKay has a line of product that a very gentle yet very effective.

I agree with going to the Dr, but in the meantime, you could try Acne Free. It's similar ingredients to Proactiv and much cheaper. I buy the cleanser at Target and it is amazing! It's worth a try :)

If you don't want to try the dermotologist (sp?) maybe try Mary Kay's Velocity line. It's specifically targeted for young skin.

No, I'm not a consultant, but I did/do use the product with positive results. =)

DS had horrible acne and nothing worked, except the Neutrogena Acne stuff. It's been a miracle for him. I think you just have to play around with things to see what will work for their skin type.

My DD uses Melalucua, it works great to keep her acne in check. In fact, she's going to need some more soon. :)

When I was in junior high, my doctor recommended the Purpose products. It worked really well for me, but I didn't have really bad skin - just enough to be self-conscious about. My husband's had more problematic skin and his dermatologist suggested the Cetaphil line of products. I used the Clinique 3 step program for a long while, too, and my skin didn't look better until I stopped using it. Also, both dermatologists told us never to use toners, or alcohol wipes, or anything like that. It removes all the natural oils and causes the skin to over-produce. You want to always use a gentle cleanser and an oil-free moisturizer - even if you don't have dry skin. I can also tell you that my husband has used Lush's coalface cleanser with really good results.

Of course, my skin is the exact opposite now and I never have breakouts, but now it's a constant effort to keep my skin from being dry and flaky. *SIGH*.

I had cystic acne as a teen and I was never brought to the derm. I now have some scarring caused by it and I would never let my child end up with it. As soon as my dd starts breaking out we will be visiting the Derm.

If your dd has superficial acne and you find a product that works, there is nothing to worry about. If she does in fact have deep painful breakouts- take her to ther Derm, no OTC product will work.

Arbonne makes a wonderful natural line of skincare products that made a huge difference for both myself and my sister.

I agree with what others have said. Everyone has different skin types and you may have to try various products before you find one that works for your daughter. You should use each product for at least 30 days as it can take that long to see results from continuous use. I would start with something on the mild side.
For deep acne, then yes, you would have to see a dermatologist.
Hope she finds something that works!

We tried OTC products for two years before going to the dermatologist. It took three months of trial and error with him and now her complexion cleared up and it has done wonders for her confidence too. He has her use Cetaphil for cleansing and moisturizing and they also recommend a line of liquid mineral make up that is light and natural looking.
