I got to the parking lot 30 minutes before the schedule destruction. The buses were prompt, running through out the day. We were taken to the neighborhood which has literally been taken over by the production. There are staging tents on neighbor's lawns, the buffet area in another's back yard, the spectator area on the lawns of the neighbor's across the street, all fenced off with portable fences. The bus remains parked in front of the house to shield the cameras from the tents, cameras and all the other stuff that you don't see on tv.

It was fun talking to everyone there. What I learned from a reliable source. There were five finalists in the area. A grief counselor was sent to each one of their homes, including the home of the Hills on Sunday morning, just in case they were not chosen. It wasn't too long before the counselor was able to assure them they she wasn't really needed, but that is the procedure. Obviously with the arrival of security, the police, etc, it was easy to determine after a while that they were the winners.
The oldest daughter, who wrote the letter, was not considered a part of the household, so she did not go. She was there today with the extended family and the sledge hammer dismantling the inside of the house. The house will have a traditional exterior and someone said, (don't know how he knows) that the house has been downsized to 4500 square feet. I took some pictures of the neighborhood so you can see the impact that this production has had.

Thanks so much!

Do the other familis in the area seem to mind the intrusion.

Dawn, what do they do with the neighbors? Are they still living in their homes or do they put them up somewhere for the duration?

The neighbors all seem thrilled for the Hills. All the residents in the immediate vicinity have been given passes. This is a through street, but all other vehicles are barred from entering, and since the entire thing is staged, the street is obstructed anyway. There has been lot of rain recently, as most of you know, and I for one was glad that I wore my old sneakers and jeans today. There is MUD everywhere. The lawns of the neighbors that have been used as a spectator area and walk way, are ruined, but I have no doubt, they will be nicer than they were to start with. There are tents for food, equipment, dining, design and cameras on trolleys in the street. There are flood lights in the back yard and there has been a lot of excavation there. A large trap rock drive was made between the Hill's and the adjacent neighbors and it straddles both yards. I would say that the yards of at least 5 neighbors are directly impacted.

It's nice that the neighbors do not seem to have a problem with it. Hopefully the production will do something for them since they are being inconvenienced. When you say "downsized" how big was it originally supposed to be?

I wish I could see your pictures here at work ;) I'll just have to wait but how great for the family to be nominated and picked!

Here are just four of the homes that have been impacted. Even if you don't see trucks, equipment, tents or a "new rock driveway", it is there. ;)

The house was supposed to be 5500 square feet. In fact, that is what the media still says. The 4500 square feet, reported to me by a bystander, is what I heard today. I don't know that it is reliable. The production company is feeding the neighborhood from what I understand. Two of the caterers are the Delaney House and Log Cabin. Those are "wedding and special events" destinations in our area. Not known for "shabby food". ;)

According to the article the family has 11 kids, many of whom are nieces and nephews who needed a place to live. Several are currently in college. One of the girls had to have a kidney transplant and I can only imagine the pain, time, and monetary strain that placed on the family. Dawn said that their home had been damaged by a fire but they were unable to make the repairs and it simply is not big enough for a family of 13.

I've always wondered, when they go in and bulldoze like this:

What happens to the water and gas pipes? I know they turn them off, but I'd think the pipes would get completely destroyed in the demolition. Do they end up having to lay in new pipes?

What a neat experience!

I have a friend who has been trying to get on the show. She's had a blog and petition about it going on for a year now. I think they are finally coming to her area, so we'll have to see if they get chosen.

How very cool to have it in your town...I love that show!

I wish my neighbors would get picked... They have 8 kids, homeschooled. They bus people back and forth to church and live in a 3 bedroom, 1 bath house that needs such work. They are super nice people.....

I might go late this afternoon to see what got done. Definitely by Friday. I love standing in the crowd and picking up little 'tidbits' of information. There were a lot of happy, verbal people yesterday, including a friend from Mrs. Hill's church who had visited her Sunday night at the Hampton Inn. That is where they stayed before they left for WDW on Monday.
