Extra Virgin Coconut Oil--how to bring it with me????

I recently had a hysterectomy a year ago & I use extra virgin coconut oil for everything... I use it on my skin, in my coffee, as a supplement, & it is a daily staple in my life--- it is a godsend as far as keeping your skin from being dry, giving you energy, & keeping your metabolism up. I have not had to travel yet though on an airplane.

Question is.... has anyone ever had it taken out of their checked luggage by security? I am pretty sure I can't put it in my carry on, it would probably be taken away.

If you have every packed it in your checked luggage... two questions....
1. Has it been removed from your checked luggage?
2. Since it melts at 76 degrees & then turns back into a solid at room temperature, did it leak out of the container into your luggage? I plan on putting it in a sealed baggie & the jar has it not yet been opened as of yet, so the seal is still on it....

Yes it leaks! I have yet to get to or from without it melting and getting all over stuff. Most of my bathroom bag contents is covered in a coconut oil slick. I don't bring the big containers, just small travel sized ones. I think if you still have the seal on it you will be safe though. Of course getting it home....

Nobody has ever removed it from my bags though.

Simple solution and it's what I do with similar liquid or creamy products: Put the bottle in a plastic ziplock bag. Never had a problem

There should be no reason on the airline or the cruise that they would take it out of your checked bag.

I would consider coconut oil to be in the same group as shampoo and lotions, which they don't take out of checked bags so it should be fine.

Thank you for the replies !!! You guys are great !!! Yes, I was going to double bag it in ziplock bags as well. I was just concerned about them removing it. I don't mind getting it home, I have lots extra at home. I just did not want to be without it on the ship. It is a new one, so it still has the seal on it, along with the lid.
Thanks again !!!!!!

Great !!!! Yes, that would be almost impossible to get off your stuff.
I bought a new one with the seal still on it, but I will still double bag it in ziplock baggies to be safe.

We are in Galveston for a cruise. We have some in our checked bag. I buy the one in the plastic container at Sprouts not the glass one. I've never had an issue with leakage.

GREAT !!!! I have the one in the plastic container as well. So glad it has not leaked or been removed from your checked baggage.
Thank you for the information, makes me feel much better !!!

This is an old thread, but I have a similar question, that hasn't been answered.

Can I bring an already opened glass jar of organic coconut oil? I use it as moisturizer and without it I break out with cystic acne.

My concern is the cruise line said not to bring any opened food items, and I don't know if they classify it as food or moistuizer? I would obviously put foil/Saran wrap in the lip, tightly close it and re-wrap and then double Baggie it just in case.

Thanks!

I also travel with coconut oil. I usually freeze it and have brought it in my carry on luggage that way too. Freezing it gets by the "no liquids" rule but it also means it won't leak out which is inevitable even with a ziplock - I don't like the mess. Last time the TSA guy pulled it out of my bag at security screening, he asked what it was and then said "oh coconut oil is great for everything isn't it?" Yes sir, it is.

I doubt there is an official rule on coconut oil but I sure wouldn't worry about it - it's a moisturizer. You could put it in an unmarked jar if you are worried.

I just bought coconut oil in packets from a company that sells travel sized minis. I thought it was the perfect solution for travel.
