Are they really that awful? Never done always told/read advice to avoid. Any opinions?

Do you mean Extra Magic Hours (EMH)? They can also be in the evening after regular park closing. In general, if you do not have park hoppers or are not staying on site, it is recommended that you avoid the park with EMH that day because of the extra hour or hours of access for resort guests. On EMH morning hours, the park will fill more quickly in the morning and stay full most of the day. For evening EMH the crowds will be more in the afternoon and evening. That is the reason for the advice. However, if you ARE staying on site and have park hoppers, using EMH can be a great touring strategy by moving to or from the least crowded park.

I use the strategy of going to the morning EMH as soon as it opens. You can get tons done in the first few hours before it gets crazy crowded. Then we hop in the late morning to a non EMH park, which is less crowded for the afternoon/evenings.

I think generally the park with EMH will be busier that day than other parks, but it will NOT be busier during the extra hours -- if you have park hoppers you can take advantage of the extra hours and then hop to a park that is recommended for the day -- or if the EMH are at night, you can go to a different park for the day and then hop over for the evening hours. If you don't have park hoppers and definitely want to be in the EMH park on a non-recommended day, you should just make sure you take full advantage of the lower crowds during the EMH and then have a good touring plan/use FP+ wisely for the rest of the day...lines are usually longest in the 11-4ish timeframe, so plan on trying to do lunch, take a break, watch some shows/parades, and/or use your FP+ selections etc. during that time frame!

morning EMHs will increase overall total crowds through the day, which is why the park planners tend to recommend avoiding them (unless you park hop mid day), also many people are turned off by needing to get up early while on vacation for 8am or even 7am EMH. All depends on how your party handles early mornings and that they end up there later which really defeats the whole advantage of EMHs. I say if you visit is long enough (5 days +) you could schedule to avoid morning EMHs.

11:00 lunch break has worked out great for us in the past :)

I've only done morning EMH in the summer, beats the heat and large crowds. Don't do it off peak, hit the low crowd park.

I think it has a lot to do with are you morning people normally in life. I don't wake up anywhere near the time I would have to leave for EMH and it just doesnt' work out for us.
