My fam of 4 is staying at the Dolphin in April. Currently, our reservation is under just my wife's name. We tried to add the rest of the fam but they wanted to charge us a different and much, much higher rate. We have our tickets and FP+ all set and we are linked through MDX. However, it just occurred to me that if the names are NOT on the hotel reservation we might not get access to EMH. Anyone had experience with this?

So I guess I'm confused. Your wife is the only with her name on the reservation. Does that mean when you booked and you entered "number of guests" you only selected "1" instead of "4"?

Hotels normally charge a per person rate (usually after 2 people), so that is why your rate is going up with for more people. If they aren't registered to the room, Disney doesn't recognize them as resort guests.

My wife made the reservation and she chose a room that would accomodate the four of us (i.e. enough beds) but when she booked it, it was just her name. We tried to add the rest of us a few months ago and they wanted to charge us more for more guests. This is the Dolphin so its Marriott and not Disney.

If the others in your party are not registered to the room, Disney doesn't recognize them as resort guests.
They liklely won't get MagicBands and likely won't be eligible for EMH.

I assume you mean, "and not DISNEY."

Regardless, if the others in your party are not registered to the room, Disney doesn't recognize them as resort guests.

Yup, just edited it to read "Disney"!!

Thanks for your help.

Okay so you did not answer the question. Your wife did not make a reservation for 4, she made it for 1. They might not even allow you to check in honestly, forget MB's and EMH. If you made a reservation for 1, you cannot show up with 4 people.

You are correct that only the person listed on the reservation will have access to EMH .

Dolphin room rates are based on double occupancy - ie 2 adults with 2 kids under 18 free. But if you are trying to change online the program is now looking for a new room to accommodate the 4 of you and the price either went up or they don't have that class of room available.

Alternately if either or both the "kids" are over 18 there is an additional charge for this.

I would call the dolphin directly and ask them to add the other guests to your room manually so that everyone gets a room key and EMH access.

Yes, rooms cost more for more people. Even if you are using the same amount of space. We are a family of 5 and we always have to find a room that will accommodate us. When our youngest was smaller he could have easily slept between my husband in a standard 4 person room, but we always paid the extra for either a cot or a larger room. It sucks sometimes paying more for more people, but that's what you get when you have kids. I personally would never lie about how many people are in a room. For fire codes and occupancy issues, it's just not right. Call the hotel, tell them you will have four people in the room and pay the extra. Sorry. Kids are expensive.

Disney will also charge for more than 2 people in a room over 18, so you would see an increase in rate at a Disney hotel too.

I might be missing something here, but why are posters saying that OP won’t even be able to check in?

The OP isn't on the reservation. His wife made the reservation for 1 person. You have to be a registered resort guest to take advantage of Extra Magic Hours. So either the OP's wife calls an adds everyone to the reservation (which they should really do) and pays the extra costs, or no one else can go to Extra Magic Hours. Simple.

Usually there is no extra cost for 2 adults and 2 children, OP needs to call.

Yes I understand the hurdle with regard to EMH. And I agree that OP should have all members of his party added to the booking. Both for the EMHs benefit and also to ensure they aren’t assigned a king bed room that sleeps only 2 max.

What I am wondering about is why some are saying OP’s family members won’t even be allowed to stay in the room. I suppose if OP paraded his whole family up to the check in desk they might be questioned. But what if his DW checked in to the room? How would they even know there are 3 other members in her party? Again, I agree that OP should correct the occupancy discrepancy. Just asking from a practical standpoint how he and his 2 kids would be prevented from entering the room.

Presumably, the front desk staff are not idiots, and would see the family of 4 walk in together with luggage, 3 people go somewhere else, and one check in.
Or if OP chose to approach the desk with his wife to check in, as the vast majority of married couples do.

Maybe it's the teacher in me, but I can't lie. Even if I know I can get away with it. When checking in I've had the front desk staff ask me how many people are staying in the room. Even if my husband and kids are still unloading the car I just couldn't lie and say it's just me. Even if I could get away with it, it's not an example I want to set for my kids. We chose to have a 5 person family, knowing that everything would cost more than if we had only had 2 kids or 1 kid or none.

I don't think the housekeepers are idiots either.

And I'm guessing, just like Disney, there is some clause that say if you knowingly commit fraud with your reservation they have the right to kick you out. Not something worth risking over a few dollars.

If their names aren't on the reservation, they can't get an extra key if they are lost, charge anything to the room, and when you sign the registration card, you are agreeing to the information that you have given them already, so they are basically out of luck if they want to do any other hotel things...
