Extra costs with driving

I've found a great deal for a nice premium rental car for our trip in July for 2 adults and 2 children. Besides the cost of the rental, how much more should I expect to spend on the cost of driving. We'll be picking up from Sixt at MCO with an all in cost of £429.

We're staying on I-drive not too far from pointe orlando and will be visiting all the parks at least once and all water parks in the 3 weeks we are there. We'll also take a visit to the outlet malls and mall at millenia (for cheesecake factory!). We may take a drive to a beach, or woodland if we fancy it.

I'm thinking about costs of fuel, parking, tolls ???? Any advice would be lovely.

Also do you think it is worth it compared to buses and taxi's.

Firstly Sixt are one of the few Car rental companies still offsite so you would have to take their shuttle bus to their depot.

£429 for 3 weeks Premium car seems a low rate for Sixt, they are rarely the cheapest(looked on Sixt.co.uk, they quote £ 1,042.33) where you seen the deal? what dates?

For us cost doesn't even come into it for car rental, we have a car or not go but I won't use public transport, I tolerate Disney transport but thats it. I just wouldn't enjoy a trip to Florida without a car.

Fuel costs around $3.50/gal http://www.orlandogasprices.com/ approx $60(£40) for a large tank. How much you use is upto you.

Parking I think is around $15/day for the themeparks, we have annual passes for them all so don't pay.

Tolls, I usually only use them to and from the airport and going to the East coast(Port Canaveral/Cocoa Beach/Kennedy Space Centre) Never spend more than about $15/trip.

Worth every penny to me as I won't use buses or taxis but others get by with no car no problem.

We stay in a similar location. For us (adults in our 20s, active and healthy, like to have a few drinks whilst on holiday), a car doesn't work in terms of practicality (mainly that we like to chill out and have a few cocktails, not rush, not worry about traffic, finding our way etc.) and cost. A 7-day unlimited bus pass, including transport to and from the airport costs £10, posted for free to the UK with no card fees. Parking alone at the theme parks is nearing £10/day. Alternatively, you can pay $2 per person in each direction, or buy a daily pass on the bus for $4.50. (If I recall correctly, children under 6 are free). Potentially, then, your entire transport costs would be £120 by using the bus, plus £310 spare for cabs, on just the hire car cost alone (and potentially significantly more, a modest 15 trips to the parks could result in a parking bill of a further £150 in itself).

Whilst we don't use public transport often in the UK, the Orlando system is superb and I would recommend it to anyone. If you're near Pointe Orlando, you will have no problem using it. The bus from the airport will take you direct to your door and back again. The theme parks are all easy to get to, as are the outlet malls (direct bus) and Mall at Milennia. The buses are regular (never waited more than 10 mins, even without planning) and timetables are available both online, printable and you can pick them up on the buses too. Unlike our experience of UK public transport, these timetables are actually adhered to. We have never had to stand on the bus; they are air conditioned and we have never experienced any problems whatsoever. We occasionally use cabs late at night etc. and find that we still make significant savings over the cost of the car.

It's up to you, of course, but I would highly recommend using the bus system. We have done both - driving and buses - and we choose the buses. It works for us, and the savings mean we can enjoy our holiday more without worrying about costs (and we can go back more often!). We have noticed over the last couple of trips that the buses are becoming increasingly popular - they are raved about on a number of sites, including TripAdvisor.

In terms of hassle - well, I suppose we do have to walk around 10m further than the parking lot of the hotel to the bus stop. I suppose we may have to wait a maximum of 15 minutes for our bus (but since they come at the same time ever hour, it's not hard to get into a routine with that - and since almost all the bus stops have benches in the shade, I suppose it could be considered hassle to sit somewhere quietly resting for a few minutes a couple of times each day). I guess occasionally we have to walk a few more metres than from the parking lot to get to our destination, but often you actually arrive closer than the parking lot. Oh and we have to buy our bus tickets before we go, but then that saves the hassle of buying them on the bus (which we can still do) or buying a pass there (from the Visitor's Centre near Pointe Orlando at no extra cost). So yeah, it's "hassle", but by no means makes any difference to the enjoyment of our holiday. I guess it's negated by not needing to pay parking tolls, find our way to a destination, get trams from the parking lot, fill up with gas, book and collect the hire car, drop the car off at the airport or pay road tolls, for us...

Oh and most I Drive hotels do offer theme park shuttles at no cost, so you can always combine these with the public buses to make the most of your stay. There are so many things to do on I Drive that you can walk to restaurants, bars, mini golf, etc. in the evenings anyway.

I would not stay offsite without a car and taxis to all the places you list would really add up. I imagine you can do it all on a bus but I wouldn't personally, far too much hassle to me. Others do though and certainly it's much cheaper. We always stay on site but have a car as well and do a mixture of driving/Disney buses depending on where we're going. I've done it once without a car staying on property and it was ok. I prefer to have the car though. My concession this year is to get a mid size SUV and not a mini van to cut costs in half. It just means two of us will have to get ME to the resort to deal with the luggage as it will only fit in a mini van. I think parking is $14 a day at Disney and similar at the other parks. We got a thing in the car that paid the tolls without stopping last trip so I can't remember how much they are. Not much I don't think. Personally I wouldn't pay a premium for a fancy car, but I know that's a nice perk of some people's holidays. Took us about £43 to fill up last year from memory.

Wow, thanks for them great responses, it really is appreciated.

We have been before and stayed onsite at disney's carribean beach resort and made use of the free disney transportation system. This seemed very efficient and I would not hesitate to do it again if we were onsite.

We only did the disney parks last time over two weeks with the exception of a trip to Seaworld and the outlet mall at vineland ave, of which we used the lynx 50 from DTD and a taxi for the mall. Our youngest was only a toddler and our daughter was 7 so we didnt want to cram the other parks within our two weeks. We basically just did the 'Disney experience' which was fine by us.

Now DS is 6 and DD a very mature 11, we want to do as much as we can in our 3 weeks as possible without burning out. From the start I have based all my booking decisions around not driving and just using public transport, so I picked a reasonable hotel close to bus stops, park tickets with hopper and free transport to the likes of legoland and busch gardens. However, I like to do my research and plan plan plan, so have looked into which buses I need to get and whether to use the I trolley or not and much more. It seems awfully long winded to get to any of the disney parks and considering we would like to hit rope drop, it would mean some seriously early starts.

From a cost point of view it is clearly obvious that buses are the cheapest way to travel, but the more I look into how our days are going to pan out and the time spent waiting, travelling and swapping buses I think if costs weren't an issue I would much prefer a car. I'd maybe like to take the family somewhere beyond the parks and have been looking into boat rides, beaches and the space center, but the idea of using public transport to these places has put me off. I'd like to be able to get to restaurants when we need to and not be limited to bus routes, so without a car I'm sure certain places would be out the question. Shopping at the malls could be troublesome considering my wife seems hell bent on filling 4 suitcases on the way home.

So it all boils down to is it worth the extra cost to our holiday and would we be selling ourself short somewhere else for the convenience and luxury of a car?

Flights £2400
Hotel £750
Park Tickets £2000
Spends £1500ish

so roughly £6500 to £6800 (wow seems expensive when I total it up)

With the luxury car £429 + 2-3 tanks (£100) parking (£150) tolls (£15) approx £700 so 10% of my holiday cost.

definately something to think about!

10% isn't too bad; for us, it would be nearer 20% of our budget to have a car (compared with 2% to ride the bus).

(I Ride Trolley is not as good as the Lynx buses for frequent use; avoid if you plan to use it more than once or twice - fine for the odd trip but it stops everywhere and is VERY poplar and therefore VERY crowded).

Now you've revealed the age of your children.... Get the car. Possibly get the cheapest car you can (which may involve someone getting the bus from the airport to the hotel with the luggage and back), but for sure, get a car. You've got a really low accommodation price for three weeks so you've saved a lot there on what you might have spent.

Well I have been looking around different rental companies and brokers and have come up with a list. The prices start around the £350 mark for a standard family car with only myself insured to drive. If I upgrade the insurance to gold level it usually bumps the price up by around £100 for an extra driver and tank of fuel.

However within this list is a right gem from Sixt which offers a premium car and an extra driver with the silver level insurance.

and like Wayneg said this deal on their site is over £1000 so it seems a very good deal.

These links only take you to their homepage. I have searched a few dates in July but the Sixt deal is showing at £450.37, what dates you searching to get £429?

It might be worth one member of your party getting an annual pass for Disney - free parking and a discount in the shops. You only need one to get all the benefits. Worth checking the difference in costs to what tickets you were planning on.

the 10th to the 30th. Not actually 3 whole weeks but I've gone ahead and booked it now. Nice selection of cars and I think it will make our holiday experience better.

Time to get saving!!!
