Extra Battery/battery extender for iphone

After another day trip yesterday to New York and (again) having my iphone battery die long before the end of my day trip, I am coming to my DIS gurus for advice...
I remember in the past hearing that there is some sort of battery extender thing that I can buy for my iphone (it's Verizon, if that matters), which will make the battery last longer or that I can switch to when the battery is low...
Can someone point me in the right direction for where to get this and tell me about how it works and your experience with it? Does it just clip onto the phone or what? Can I use the case I already have or do I need to get a different case?

What are the settings on your phone for Brightness? I found that by turning that down as far as I could stand it and still see made a good bit of difference in my battery life.

Brightness is turned down to about 25%, yesterday I had to turn it up a bit when I was trying to look at maps outside and such, but normally, it's as dim as I can stand it. And I have mail set to fetch only when I tell it to. I've been playing with settings to preserve battery life for a while, though I might be missing some options to save as much as possible.

My husband has the AT&T iPhone but he bought the battery extender from the Apple store.

It is this little thing that you plug in and charge. You carry it with you on longer day trips and when the battery is low, you plug in the extender and it "downloads" (for lack of a better word) power to the iPhone. He's never needed more than one for a single day away from the house.

I have a juice pack. I think its my Mophie. Its like a protective case and it basically doubles my battery. They are pricey, I think I paid about $70 but so very worth it for me. I use it as a backup and have it with me at all times , just in case I need more battery life.
