I borrowed my friends Rebel (the one that I was thinking about buying) for the High School Musical On Ice tour that we went to this past weekend. I was playing with different settings to see how they turned out although I wished I would have tried other different things but was too worried about not having any pictures at all. Sorry that I'm linking a bunch of them, I'm also posting this on the CB for others to see. I was really pleased with how most of them turned out considering this is the first time I've shot with a DSLR. I've done minimal editing/cropping other than to resize to post here.

Here's a couple I shot last month, both hand held with Canon 40d on burst mode with Canon's 85 MM f/1.8 lens.

f/2.0, ISO 3200, 1/30 sec, AWB, Center weight metering mode.

We went to the Kalahari Waterpark in Sandusky, Ohio last weekend and took some photos with this assignment in mind. I got to use my gorilla pod that I received for Christmas! All shot with my Nikon D50 and set to aperture priority. For the shots in the lobby, I used my 35-55mm lens and for the shots in the waterpark, I used my 50mm. I also incorporated the gallon-sized ziplock back protective barrier method.

Thanks, jann. I love how no explanation is needed here. I've shown my album around a bit and only one person knew what it was.

You guys, too, will also appreciate the rest of the story of that picture. That was taken from Kringale's Bakery shortly after Illuminations started. We'd actually had a really relaxing "resort day", but late in the afternoon decided to hit the parks for the evening. We'd been debating about whether to go to the MK, with an 11pm EMH, vs Epcot, open till 9. Our decision was made when the MK bus pulled up and was completely jammed full. So we hopped on the next bus that came along, which was Epcot. Blew around there for a couple of hours, but must have had MK on my brain. Because right after I took that shot, I turned to my family and said, "you know, we could still make MK if we hurry!" There was no hesitation from any of them, LOL, so we flew over to MK and had two of the best hours we ever had there. It's a great memory and I'll always think of it when I see that picture!

Also drooling over the steak pictures (we grill year round, too - anything that involves less clean up works for me!); enjoying everyone's pictures.

Don't take it so personally and I was talking about shots taken much earlier than yours anyway. What is the point of having a thread that is supposed to inspire you to go out and shoot if you do not go out and do it?

not trying to be difficult, but for those of us not fortunate enough to live in Florida, it's hard to get inspired to go outside shooting when it's 8 degrees out with a wind chill below zero...


is it better to have a small thread with new pics or a larger thread with some old pics, that will help people learn the methods for low light photos..??

Took this the other day. To get her to keep this pose I had to use the tripod with remote shutter and have her mimick me. If I put my hands on my chin then she did it, by the time I would get the camera to my eye she would change positions. So she's actually looking at me doing the same pose. Very tricky DADDY!! hehehehehe

Besides having such a cutie for the subject, I really like how her face is lit in the picture and the catchlights in her eyes - beautiful shot!

Thank you very much.

It helps that there is a window in the direction she is looking. Thus no need for a flash. It wasn't bright enough for low ISO and fast shutter speeds.

much less kind of dangerous..yesterday was around 4 temp here with 50mph wind gusts ...have no idea just how low the wind chill was... and blowing snow so hard i couldn't see across the street ...umm i think i'll stay inside thanks and look at fl. photos

ditto, we had that 68 car pile up on I-81 because of the winds and whiteout snow conditions..

love the sky reflecting and the cat tail...now from the other end of the weather spectrum

sunset through a frosted window( brrrrrr, but tomorrow is supposed to be warmer, up to 20 degrees..but up to 10more inches of snow )

i converted this from raw and did the 20/60 sharpening i always do
f8 1/640 iso 400 70-200 f4 lens at 200mm

That is REALLY beautiful! I'm in SW Ohio. We are just getting snow now. We missed the last dumping...but it sure is COLD!!!

thanks, the info is wrong though for some reason..i know it was like f7, shutter 200 ,iso was 100 or 200 don't remember which( i just know cause i tried changing to my 50 mm to keep the shutter up..which meant i missed the light by the next shot since i had to go downstairs to get my bag ) don't know why it came up what it did on photobucket

Now be honest, what would you consider wrong with this photo. The house lights blown out, anything else? I took the same photo with ISO 400 and 800, but those were alot grainier.

OK.... I am going to be brave and post here.

I am not a 'photographer', just take lots of pictures for fun. I have an Olympus 770SW and here are some recent low light pics. When I saw this thread I had to participate. My hubby is always harassing me for refusing to use flash when it's dark... he doesn't understand how flash can ruin certain pictures!

These have not been editted in any way. If anyone has some helpful hints or tips feel free to send them my way!

This was my kitty a couple weeks ago as he was sleeping next to me while I putz around in the computer room in the middle of the night.

These last two are from a Monster Truck Jam two weeks ago. They wouldn't let me bring my tripod in so I did the best I could being up in the nosebleed section of the stadium.
