Hello Disers,

Has anyone had their house painted recently? My neighbor had a professional painter painting his exterior today, so I had him come over and give me an estimate. 1400 sq ft house (stucco) and prime and paint all the wood that borders below the roof. He'll also paint the garage door and frame to match. $1500 total.
High? Low? Any experiences? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks, Jeffrey

Is he painting the stucco too? And does that include the cost of the paint? A couple of years ago I had just the trim painted on our house. It was 2100 sq ft, two story, and with the paint it was about $1300. But I think he gave me a lower quote because he had already painted every room on the inside of the house.

That may be in line if it is just the trim and garage door. If it is the stucco too, it is much too low. Also make sure he scrapes, primes, seals and generally prepares properly. And uses a quality paint like Sherwin Williams or equivalent.

Thank you all for the quick replies! $1500 was for the paint and the labor to paint the stucco, the garage door, and priming and painting the entire trim and the frame of the garage door. 1400 sq ft, one story home. Sounds like a deal.
First I'll ask how my neighbor likes the job he did and then I guess it's on to Yelp for other opinions of this particular painter. The neighbor JUST moved in, so I'm not sure if he's there to live or it's a flipper. Yesterday he had the carpet cleaners, painters and roofers all working next door! Thanks again, Jeffrey

That sounds really low to me, but it may differ in your area.

We had our exterior painted on our 1904 two-story home in the spring. We have a small house, only 1500sq ft plus a single car detached garage and ours was $3,200 (after tax). We got 4 estimates and 3 of them were in the $3,000-$3,500 range...one estimate was $7,000. LOL

We used Sherwin Williams Duration paint which is $68/gallon retail. Make sure you use the best paint you can afford, it makes all the difference in the world.

Due to lead laws, we couldn't have our house scraped and sanded but our painter did scrape off the peeling areas for us (shh!) and did 2 coats on all surfaces. The other estimates only included one coat. He also used 2 cases of caulk, and 14 gallons of paint. We had him paint our 3 exterior doors as well, and our wrought iron porch supports.

I would urge you to get at least two other estimates before pulling the trigger.

The reasonable thing to do is to get at least three estimates for your house, in your location, with painters who have looked at the project.
