Woke up around 8:30ish and was in no big rush--we wound up eating breakfast at Topsiders and ran into my sister's family--OOPS I forgot I told them I'd go to the church service with them! They said it was nice but only 15 passsengers out of 2700. Wow.
After that we headed up to deck 9 for a big, special 4th of July party! They had red, white and blue bunting on all the railings and two big uncle sam type inflatables blowing around on fans on deck 10. The Charles Marshall band was rockin' and eventually Mickey and the gang came out in patriotic garb. It was pretty neat. We missed the national anthem but they were playing stuff like "Born in the USA", "R-o-c-k in the USA", "Sweet Home Alabama", etc. (which was fine except I kept flashing back to that scene in Con Air where the convicts are dancing around to the same song).
Soon after we pulled into Key West. My whole family, my sister's family and my Mom walked off the ship and headed to Mallory Square to do the Trolley tour. My dad's back was bugging him already and he was laying on the floor of his room doing puzzles. It was pretty hot, and my Mom is 72 and tends to forget what the heat does to her, so she wilted pretty quick. Luckily it was a very breezy ride on the trolley. We did it ourselves so we could get on and off. We got off at the Hemingway House stop, and Mom, DD#1 and I went through it. Not much to see, I'm afraid. The big attraction was the cats. The rest of the group got snacks and pop at a nearby stand. After that we got back on the Trolley. Now our first driver was pretty cool, a woman, and the second one was OK, but he kept saying "Welcome to Miami, it will be Key West again tomorrow"--I guess a lot of Miamians go down there for the 4th and he said that EVERY TIME someone got on. It got old fast. No need to be bitter about more tourists, is there? He also said that the Disney ship brought about 300 more paying customers that day than they had planned for and they were short of Trolleys--a couple of times groups would be waiting but there would not be enough room on our trolley; they would have to wait. We had planned on getting off at Southernmost point but didn't--too hot, and there was a huge line for photos. We stayed on until stop 10, the next to last stop. Then we got off--we left mom and sister's family on--so we could walk down Duval and get the shopping done. We got souvenirs at Margaritaville and had a couple of burgers and a margarita--then got a shirt at Sloppy Joes--hit Del Sol--went to Hogs Breath but that logo is NOT attractive in the least so I didn't buy anything. I never saw Kinos, which bummed me out. We made our way back to the ship and took some photos, and got ready for dinner. They had a special supplemental menu and we all got champagne in souvenir glasses to keep (kids got cider). After dinner there was a big patriotic sing along in the atrium and a huge balloon drop for the holiday, then the kids made it into their clubs. DH and I got a photo with both Patriotic Mickey AND Minnie! Bonus!
Me, sis, BIL and a couple of the girls went to WHo Wants to be a MOuseketeer, but they picked all the rows around us. The people who got up there really didn't know much. One girl didn't know Jock in "Lady and the Tramp" was a dog! I left when the 3rd person choked on an easy question and went to get DH for the fireworks. Eventually they had fireworks on the other side of the island which you could see from deck 10, but it was pretty far off.
DH, sis, BIL and I went to Match Your Mate--funny because one question was "if you were cruising with your wife's family, which one of them would you leave behind if you had to?" Both husbands said they would sacrifice themselves. Two of the contestants said "my wife's sister!" After that it was about midnight so I picked up DS and we headed for the rooms for bedtime.
Tomorrow; Day at sea, Palo, Chakra capsule
