For those who have taken their own luggage off the ship, was it a pain? We are thinking of taking our luggage of the ship with us when we disembark rather than leaving it out the night before. Do a lot of people do this? Is it difficult to maneuver the luggage disembarking? It will be 2 adults, each with one piece of wheeled luggage.

Taking your own bags off can be an issue - you would need to bring them to breakfast with you, as DCL does request everyone out of their rooms by 8:00. The MDRs are not set up for luggage inside. Most times you may be allowed to store it in a public space near the doorway to the MDR, along with everyone else who's carrying their bags off.

Getting elevators/stairs are a problem, also. Elevators are typically fairly small, 2 adults, 2 wheeled bags, and carryons would fill up a lot of space. Assuming that the elevator is empty when it gets to your deck for you to get on. And the line getting off can get crammed up so people (mostly kids) may not be paying attention and could run/fall into your bags being pulled behind you.

I wouldn't say a lot of people do it. But people do it.

We have left our bags in our room and then had breakfast in cabanas. One of the main reasons you would want to carry your bags off yourself is to get off the ship fast. So with that said you would probably be done with breakfast and off the ship by 8am. I love express walk off. I can normally be home and washing clothes by 9:30.

I have found it pretty easy, especially when you ditch the MDRs (let your server know in advance) and head up to Cabana's for a quick breakfast. Unless it is no longer open on disembarkation day? It has been in the past. Sometimes, one in our party will go get finger foods (muffins, some fruit, etc) and bring it to the room. The elevators can be an issue, but just plan in some extra time, eventually you will get one. We have done it with 2 rolling suitcases per adult and been just fine. Also, while the MDRs are not set up for big luggage, they will help you if needed, either by leaving it at front of restaurant or otherwise. I do not think you would be going to the MDRs anyhow with self walk out because you want to get out sooner anyhow.

Sorry for the ramble, it is fine, we find it quicker, you can get off ahead of the crowd and be on your way, of course, this is only true when the ship is on time.

You can have breakfast in Cabanas and leave your bags in your room until you are done. You must be out of your room by 8:00 am but Cabanas opens up very early. We were there last Saturday before 7:00, ate and then headed back to our room to collect our carry ons. We did have to wait for an elevator that had room (all were filled with people and luggage) so after a few minutes of full elevators we just walked the 3 decks down to the atrium. We were off the ship and on the road by 7:50 am. We left our bags in the hallway and collected them in the morning in the luggage hall (well, actually we used a porter who found them and took them all the way to the 3rd floor parking garage for us).

We wouldn't be going to the MDR for breakfast. Do you know what time Cabanas opens? We would probably run up there for a quick bite and be back to the room before 8am so we can head out.

My last cruise we had breakfast in cabanas at 6:30 and they started letting us off the ship at 7... We were probably through customs by 7:15.

We've always done Express Walk Off. We're leave our luggage in our room, head up to Cabanas around 6:30 or so, and then disembark as soon as the ship is cleared. We're usually one of the first groups off the ship, but we like to leave early and head over to one of the parks for the day and then take a late flight home that night. It's a rough transition to go from the ship back to the "real world" so we ease our pain a little by having just a little more Disney time before we fly home :earboy2:

On the short cruises like the 3/4 night on the Dream, alot of folks carry off their own luggage. The longer cruises most people don't. When you leave your room to go down stairs, hit both the up and down buttons. Often we will go up in an empty elivator to come down. Much easier to get on board especially the later it gets in the morning.

I usually go to Cabanas and eat and bring back the wife her bagel w/ cream cheese, bacon and crispy cream doughnuts and the diet coke. Usually we leave the room around 7:20 am.

6:30? That's great! We will probably have the early breakfast at cabanas then take our luggage with us. We will be using the Disney transfer to the Contemporary and would like to get there as early as possible!

ScrapHappy, we are the same way. We added a night at the CR to "ease" our way back to reality. No need to rush back home to the cold!

Thank you for the replies everyone! :wave2:

Do you have to let them know you want express walk off or do you just simply keep the luggage with you?

you SHOULD tell your room host otherwise they will keep checking your room. They have to have the luggage out of the hallways before they get some rest. You should see them around gathering luggage. Just a courtesy to let them know. IMHO

I never would have thought of that. Thank you for the tip!

They know there is express disembarkation, so they are aware of the rules, and we know the rules you have to get your luggage out by a set time say 10pm. It's made clear on the disembarkation videos on the TVs.

Hosts will only check the halls not the rooms, if it's in the hall they will take it.

As a courtesy if you wish to tell them you can but they know the rules.

We had an excellent relationship with our hosts but there was no need to inform him when we did express disembarkation.
