Express Pass / Ticket Purchase for Onsite Stay

If I stay at one of the Universal hotels with express pass, do I need to purchase the park tickets through Universal as well, or is it entirely separate where I can purchase tickets through other means (such as undercover tourist) and still have the express pass benefit?

You can purchase them however you want.

No, you can buy your tickets from anyone.

The EP comes from just staying there......tickets are a separate entity altogether.
