Is Grand Cayman a good port to explore on our own? Any suggestions on what to see and/or where to eat? Does the ship dock near the center of town or do we need transportation? Thanks!

Grand Cayman is a tender port. The tender boat will drop you off in the center of town. There is a shopping mall with free wifi right there. Cabs are plentiful and you can ride short way to beach.

I spent a week on Grand Cayman, so we were able to break things down on different days. The cruises dock right at Georgetown and you can easily walk around, shop and eat without any transportation (We were able to walk it from halfway down seven mile beach and to explore Georgetown). If you want to go to Stingray City, you can book that on your own which includes snorkeling stops, there are multiple companies who offer this. You can take a taxi to get anywhere on the island, it's small and won't take long to get anywhere. You can go to the turtle farm by taxi. If you opt to stay in Georgetown, There are several restaurants, I know we ate at one called something like Paradise, it overlooks the water and was really good and very close to where you will be. There's Guy Harveys we ate at. I can't remember very many right off, but a quick search will tell you all your options and anything in Georgetown is walkable (very easily), even with kids.

They also have a very efficient public bus system in Grand Cayman. The fare is (if I remember correctly) 2.50 US$ per person per ride. The main bus depot is easy to find. Just walk straight into the town from the tender port area and then you see a square with the court house. The bus depot is on the other side of that square. You will recognize it because there are a lot of mini busses standing around.

We took the bus to Public Beach and just spent three blissful hours there bobbing around in the wonderful water with a view of the Disney Fantasy. We found everyone to be very helpful. The bus driver made sure to show us where to go from the bus stop (very easy to find, not difficult at all) and where to catch the bus for the way back.

Most affordable excursion ever for 5 $ each (in total, there and back)!

OfftoDWD, You can explore the downtown area on your own, shops, banks and restaurants but honestly if you haven't been to stingray city, you need to go. Its bucket list material for sure. Its such a beautiful area, the water is like a swimming pool and where else can you interact with stingrays, the way you do there. If cost is the issue, you can get trips as economical as $45 Us, cheaper for kids. https://grandcaymancruiseexcursions...an-stingray-city-sailing-snorkeling-charters/
My mother, who doesn't even swim, came out with us to stingray city and was in awe, just watching from the boat.
