Expiring points extended

Unfortunately this does nothing at all to prevent the 2021 glut of points from people banking so many 2019 and 2020 points. If anything it exacerbates it with the borrowing change.

I’d bet there’s more to come.

Interesting. Certainly negatively impacts people who use contracts every other year by borrowing the future years' points which seems somewhat common (i.e. two home resorts, banking and borrowing every other year). Sounds like that won't be possible at least for a while.

I read that part of the email and went "whewww" because this is how I structure my 50pt AUL contract and turn it into a full week every 3 year type of deal. I banked/borrowed 100% to do that and booked it several weeks ago. I wouldn't be able to do that today.

When DVC says they aren't extending their developer points, I wonder how many that equates to? If anywhere the same percentage of the overall membership that could be a sizeable amount they are eating. Good on them for taking that bullet.

The developer points they are referring to are ones given to a new buyer as an incentive.

It sounds like those owners lose out on that aspect of the deal.

I think this was as fair as they could have done, and quite honestly; more than I really expected. I really didn't expect them to extend banked points that had been used. That will make a lot of people happy, though it didn't affect us personally.

I guess we will learn the real value when we have a resort opening date. Until then, it's all essentially meaningless, though greatly appreciated.'

I'm gonna call this a win.

I could do that, but that would cost quite a bit, as I need all 270 of my points. I'm so bummed. I'm happy for those that these rule changes benefit, but I'm sad for me and my family, and my 6 year old grandson who was so looking forward to celebrating his 7th birthday next April in WDW.

I'm sure a lot of people will be in this boat as many bought with banking/borrowing in mind.

Do you have 270 total or 135 and were planning to borrow 135 from the following UY? If you have 135, you could buy a transfer of 67 points to make up the deficit. Not optimal, but better than nothing.

Now lets hope they move the cash rooms to the DVC side if thats possible. I know they moved some CCV studios into DVC service in Janurary since they became available for the whole year to book.

I think it's a best case overall accommodation. There's no perfect solution to an unexpected closure, but I'll gladly give up a little flexibility so that others don't lose points. I'd greatly appreciate the gesture if I had an affected booking.

Do you mean not pull rooms at 60 days for breakage? It will be interesting to see if Disney gives that up.

Yea, we have 270 total. My sister and I both own contracts, and we take turns using them for big family vacations every year. Maybe we'll finally take a trip to Universal next year. I've been resisting, I'm a diehard WDW fan, but I'm sure the grandkids would be excited to go to Universal for the first time. We have four little grandsons, ages 18 months, 6, 7 & almost 8. I'm so bummed.

Ya that, but also they rent their points they own out for cash (dont they?), and if they dont rent out due to a slump on the cash side, move them over for us to use to help.

You could still borrow the 50% and just do a split stay with a Universal hotel. The brand new surfside resorts look nice and are value priced if budget is an issue there. Obviously a split stay with 4 grandsons is far from optimal (might be a bit of an understatement there ;) ) but it's at least something to consider.

I agree. This was a zero sum game, any benefit to one group of individuals will, by the nature of timeshares, adversely affects another group.

This was probably the most equitable/least intrusive. They didn't have to extend the validity of expiring points, and they were well within their rights to suspend borrowing -- it's clear they had that authority on their Borrowing Points Rules.

Happy for you that it turned out in your favor! I agree it was a good way to help all involved,

Yes, they do, I am going to say I would be surprised for them to not use their own points, but you never know

Of course, we won’t every know because rooms being sold for cash could come from trades,

At least those with expiring points during the closure, at least can book into the next 6 months...although April UY realistically will have at most 4 months because it says the 6 month clock starts from expiration date, not resort opening.

Sounds like right now, they won’t be doing anything.

ETA: info on website seems to say they will be banked if resort still closed

Thanks Sandi! I’m very pleased with this decision by DVC. I spoke with a rep after I received the email to inquire about Aug use year points with May booking and he confirmed what you said. He told me just wait for them to cancel my May trip one week before and my 200 points will be banked. Very relieved! Actually planning to buy another contract now
