expiration date on eye solution

While cleaning a closet, I just found a few bottles of unopened contact cleaning solution from my eye doctor that expired in July. I know you can still use stuff like Tylenol that's expired but what about contact stuff? Sure hate to throw it out!!

a cleaning solution isn't going to go bad... the real factor in when to toss them is how long they have been opened, but if they are still factory sealed then it wouldn't be an issue a year after the expiration.

Toss it. Solutions contain chemicals to balance the ph and they don't last forever.

It is really just a salt water solution... sterilized prior to being sealed... nothing is going to change in there for years beyond the expiration date. Not to mention every time you have a expiration date on something you have to remember that the company is going to always include a pretty fair amount of flexibility in the time, if the products were fine the day before they expired they aren't magically going to go bad the next day.

If you really were concerned about your eyes you wouldn't be wearing contacts, no person that wears glasses has ever gotten an eye infection from their glasses... but people DO get infections from their contacts.

The OP is looking at stuff that is a month out... not an issue unless the bottles had been opened.

I am currently using contact solution that's about a month past its expiration date, and I fully intend to finish the bottle.

I have eye disease and my mother is blind. We don't mess around over here when it comes to eye health. We know how important it is.

Saline is basically a salt water solution. Multipurpose no-rub contact solution is not just saline, but has other chemicals in it to dissolve the proteins and buildup that collects on contacts. Thus, what furb & dez stands.

If it's just saline for rinsing and storing then I'd use it.

If it's cleaning/soaking solution, then I would toss it.

If it was me, I'd use it. especially since they are only 31 days past the "safe" date. The FDA requires items to have expiration dates on them and most companies put a date on the item to ensure that under the worst conditions, after opening or stored in extreme temperatures that the product is safe. My company does product life span testing and we have many items that are safe for a long time past the date, but they put a date on it way earlier to make sure there is no problem.

I am using Saline Saline Solution that expired in January... on Contacts that are sealed, but expired in December.. No Problems here, but that won't mean you can't have problems, it is still taking a risk...But then, I drink milk and eat yogurt after the sell by date.. and I buy day old bread and marked down meat. Oh yeah, my Olay Definity; it expired in Nov 10.. still works like a charm, and it was only 8.00 at the railroad salvage.
