Experiences with weird food intolerances?

I'm one of those unfortunate people that has some weird food issues, I'm lactose intolerant and if I eat onions or garlic I get really, unpleasantly sick.Unfortunately, onion and garlic are used in just about everything for flavor (even things like salad dressing and ketchup). I basically can't have anything delicious, ever. I've noticed that most menus include milk-free options, but has anyone had any success with other food issues? I know that the menus won't specify, I just want to eat something other than plain french fries and plain lettuce on this trip.

I’m allergic to both dairy and garlic, along with a bunch of other stuff, and Disney is one of the few places I feel comfortable eating at. Table service will be easier but there are a few quick service that can handle those. Pecos Bills in MK has rice bowls and Sunshine Seasons in Epcot has rotisserie chicken. Anywhere that has burgers can do a plain burger with no seasoning.

I can't eat bell peppers so I know what you mean!

I found TS places were really great with my intolerance, although there was an almost issue at Sanaa where I ordered something that had bell peppers and they caught it right before my meal was brought out. The chef was amazing and I was quickly given an alternate meal that was safe for me. (I call it an allergy when I am at a restaurant because people kept getting confused when I said it was an intolerance!)

CS places were a bit more hit or miss, Sunshine Seasons was a big hassle and I had to insist on seeing the ingredient binder before I found something I could eat. I learned my lesson well after trusting Lucky Fortune Cookery in DCA...although some of the nausea might have been related to riding California Screamin' right after lunch! :crazy2:

For all of our ADRs on our WDW trip in August, I clicked the option for "Other" on the special dietary requests page and I assume it will be like our last trip and someone will come out to speak with me at each restaurant.

No experience with something out of the ordinary, but on my Jan 2017 trip, I let all the servers and chefs know about my dairy/oil free/low fat diet. The chef always came out for TS and seemed to take my dietary needs very seriously and offered alternatives. Not sure if this helps, but I know Disney made me feel welcome and comfortable eating.

1) I am allergic to substandard food quality and poor service.
2) Alas, few ways to remedy such by looking at a menu.
3) Since menu selections don't fix the problem, I pick my WDW eateries carefully.

:cool1:

My DH has a dairy allergy and also can’t have any spice that is hot like black pepper. My DM has an intolerance to salt. We eat all meals TS and Disney does a great job. We have even eaten at buffets and dinner shows. The chefs we encountered over the years have been wonderful and most came back to make sure everything was ok and asked if they needed anything else.

I have a ginger allergy which is extremely rare. I can typically figure out dishes that contain ginger on my own so I rarely ask about it. If I do accidentally eat ginger I can tell right away and can just pop Benadryl that I always carry. My throat doesn't swell up or anything, I just end up with hives from head to toe if I don't take Benadryl right away. At Trader Sam's I had to assume everything contained ginger but I asked the server about ginger because I was hungry. She sent the chef over who told me everything I couldn't have, everything I could have, and items they could prepare ginger-free for me without cross contamination. I tried to downplay it but the chef was so nice and told me that having to worry about taking Benadryl so my trip won't be ruined by horrible hives didn't sound like a fun way to spend my vacation. He encouraged me to ask about ginger so I would I wouldn't have worry about it. I have found that WDW bends over backward to accommodate people with ANY kind of allergy. They will even whip up something special for people that have lots of allergies. I have a friend whose son is allergic to almost everything - they aren't able to eat out and she always has to pack food for him. She was encouraged to take him WDW but packed special food for him. She ended up crying from happiness because for the first time her son was able to eat food from a restaurant with the rest of the family. The chefs made special items for him and he loved everything.

Please don't be shy about mentioning your allergies at WDW. They will make you feel like royalty with how much they clearly want you to be happy with your meal AND safe!

WDW is great for those with allergies, my son is allergic to eggs and we tried asking more than once to just tell us what didn’t have eggs and we’d chose from those things and they insisted to order him whatever he liked and they’d make it egg free and separate from any risk of cross contamination, the chefs were more concerned than we were lol

We must be twins! I have the same issues with these foods as well as high fructose corn syrup. I will say, Disney (especially table service) is wonderful at working with you. Don't be shy to alert them. Enjoy

I don’t think onion, garlic, and lactose are that weird to be sensitive to.

Just tell them. TS will work with you, and counter service will have binders for you to review.

That’s a rough and irritating one. Ds can’t have that, or even just corn syrup or corn syrup solids. So pretty much all the desserts are off limits, even ice cream unless we go to Haagen Dazs. Uncrustables, ugh. And combined with dairy problems it’s a double whammy with the tofuti dessert options (unless they’ve changed the ingredients since last time I checked)

Yes. We have a myriad of food allergies in my group - vegetarian with a mushroom allergy (bad combo!) and one with a latex allergy & latex cross-reactive foods (bizarre grouping of fruits and veggies). We eat TS at least once a day as our main meal; the chefs are awesome and we eat safely and well. The rest of the time we ask for binders at QS if necessary (or just know what might be problematic.)

Enjoy your trip!

I’m allergic to citrus fruits and every TS restaurant has made me feel very comfortable that my food has been prepared to my specifications. Only once at Jiko was my food not prepared properly and that was putting a lime garnish on my plate. The head chef caught and remade my meal.
