So I started seeing a new general doctor about a month ago. She referred me to see someone about depression. Just got done seeing her this morning and she has prescribed Prozac.

I know everyone is different on how they react to meds and such. But I'm curious if you had any kind of side effects with it.

Weight gain? Weight loss? Stayed the same?

Headaches? Nausea? Anything?

Did you notice a difference in yourself while taken it? Did others around you notice a difference?

Anything you could tell me about your experiences would be helpful. Thanks.

I have not taken it personally but I know a lot of people take it successfully.

I think it got a lot of bad press, though, and people remain nervous about it.

I would suggest trying it with the expectation that it will help and hopefully you will experience few to no side effects. Everyone is different.

Good for you for getting help.

My daughter tried it and for her it made her too tired and also caused some achy muscles. I did notice an improvement in her mood, however. It takes about six weeks to see and understand the full effects.

She switched to another related med - lexipro and it has been wonderful for her when combined with working with a therapist. There are many, many medications out there so I'd encourage you to be patient in finding the right dosage and med. It's worth the trouble in finding something that will help you feel much better. There is nothing to lose, imo.

Side note: General practitioners are great but if it turns out you don't find a good fit with the medication early on I'd recommend a psychiatrist to help you find the right one.

Edited to add that many docs start with Prozac because it is tried and true for many many people. It has great efficacy. It has been around the longest and is very trusted.

Really, the side effects of clinical depression and anxiety are often sooooooo much worse then the small chance a medication will even cause a side effect that I don't know why people worry so much. Oh yeah, depression and anxiety make one worry, lol! ;)

Just because she prescribed something doesn't mean you need to fill the prescription.

Fluoxetine is also known and classified as a bicyclicantidepressant, meaning that the chemical structure of the drugconsists of two rings.

This drug is used in the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Bulimia Nervosa, Panic Disorder, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder and is the only antidepressant approved for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in minors under the age of 18. Off label uses include Fibromyalgia, Bipolar Disorder, Chronic Fatigue, Lupus, ADD, ADHD, headaches and Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

This drug started out life as an antihistamine, diphenhydramine, which was found to inhibit the reuptake of the monoamineneurotransmitterserotonin. Fluoxetine is fairly stimulating, yet is an approved treatment for anxietyrelated conditions; even more converse is the fact that anxiety is one of the most (if not the most) frequent side effectof fluoxetinetherapy. The drug also possesses a remarkably long half life which has proven useful in the treatment of more reluctant patients; should they suddenly stop taking the drug, the antidepressant effect will remain for a fair amount of time, hopefully long enough for the cessation to be noticed and rectified. Currently fluoxetine is available for use in children as young as eight, should psychotherapies fail.Fluoxetine fast became an infamous drug under the brand name of Prozac; millions were prescribed the drug, largely due to an extremely effective and extensive advertising campaign. Unfortunately, the medication became controversial towards the end of the century due to an increased risk of suicidal behaviour amongst patients treated with the drug.

The most common side effects are anxiety, headaches, nervousness, insomnia, fatigue, tremor, dizziness, dry mouth, weight loss (possibly leading to anorexia) or weight gain, a dry mouth, a loss of libido, diarrhoea or constipation, excessive sweating, nausea and diarrhea; fluoxetine also causes mania in approximately 6% of patients. Weight and libido issues usually fade after a week or so of therapy. Rarer side effects include a rash, anger, rage and influenza like symptoms; extreme symptoms include Herpes, bleeding gums, antisocial tendencies, excessive hair growth, engorged breasts and involuntary tongue protrusion.

Maximum therapeutic effect usually manifests after a period of a month to a month and a half. Interestingly, Fluoxetinecan amplify the effectiveness of other psychiatricdrugs.

When presented as Symbyax, where Fluoxetine is compounded with the atypical antipsychoticOlanzapine, one naturally experiences the typical side effects of both Fluoxetine and Olanzapine all in one. Unusually, the combination can cause Influenza like symptoms, a nasty rash or even Hives (both Fluoxetine and Olanzapine cause rashes - this would be worse), Tardive Dyskinesia and very rarely the drug combination can cause a change in voice, an increase in libido(unlike virtually every psychiatricdrug!) and Aphasia.

Taken from my archives, Seratis. I hope you find that all interesting!

As for my experience, it elevated my mood for a few days but eventually proved to be not strong enough, even at 80mg/day. That and it gave me a vague, out of body experience. Nothing tragic, just not for me.

Finally, I urge you to visit Crazy Meds, especially their forums. From experience that site is intensely down-to-earth, friendly and easy going. Indispensable.

I've been on it for a few years and it has kept my panic attacks away, which was my main concern. It keeps my mood pretty balanced. Weight - pretty much the same. My only complaint is I am more tired during the day than I used to be. Is it the meds though, or my aging? LOL... who knows. ;)

I went on prozac after a full hysterectomy. I was very depressed and my ob/gyn prescribed it. The prozac elevated my mood, but it also made me have happy, unrealistic thoughts about any bad situation. For example, I spent tons of money (overspent money I didn't have) on credit cards. I couldn't stop myself and didn't think was I was doing was detrimental to my financial health. It also made me less concerned about my job; I felt like I could just skate by putting minimal effort into anything I was doing. I gained about 50 lbs, because I would weigh myself and not care what I weighed or what I looked like in clothes, I just kept buying new ones on the credit card. When I finally realized that prozac wasn't good for me, and wanted to get off them, I had to titrate down on the meds. You can't just stop taking prozac, it takes weeks to get off it. The entire time I was titrating off, I was having head and eye spins and nausea.

By the time I got off the prozac, I had to declare bankruptcy due to the amount of credit card debt I was in. I would never in my life go back on it or suggest to anyone that they go on it. I would check with a psychiatrist to see if there is some other form of anti-depressant you can take that doesn't have so many side effects.

This is just my experience, I would suggest that you talk to a trained doctor (a psychiatrist) about any anti-depressant meds and think long, hard, and carefully about his/her advice before making any decisions.

I've been on it for 20 years and it changed my life. It dramatically helps my anxiety. I went off of it for my first pregnancy and didn't realize how much of a difference it makes. I will never stop taking it again unless there is a very good reason too. I had no side effects but some people do. It does take 6 weeks to fully build up.

Wanted to add that Prozac wasn't the first medication my psychiatrist tried. I was on 2 others beforehand that just weren't the right fit. Don't get discouraged if Prozac isn't right for you.

I've recently started back on it; it was recommended because other family members responded well to it. It's been about two months now. I've had some issues with insomnia and exhaustion, and my appetite has fluctuated a little bit, but it always has so that wasn't a huge change. Libido has dropped a little, but I am perimenopausal so am not sure how much is drug-related and how much is just hormonal, though on that front, since starting back on 20mg/day my PMS symptoms have vastly improved. Fewer headaches, fewer mood swings. I'd forgotten what it was like not to go insane with rage for a week every month.

All that being said: they tried it for my youngest sister and ended up changing it to something else (Lexapro? Maybe?) and my dad said the change in her was incredible. The new one is working out much better for her than the Prozac.

Just to reiterate what previous posters have said, don't be worried if Prozac isn't the right one for you; there are zillions of antidepressants and related meds out there. One is bound to be right for you!

My doctor switched me from Lexapro to Prozac about three months ago. Each week I got a different side effect which would then subside. Then the next week I would get another side effect. The final side effect was severe an extreme heartburn that had her worried and so I transitioned off of Prozac to Trintellix. . Initially the heartburn got better and quickly came back. I’ve been off everything now for one week and still have some of the heartburn lingering. My anxiety amazingly is doing ok. Anyone else have an experience like this? I’m extremely sensitive to all meds and it takes a lot of luck to find anything that agrees with my system.

good for you for seeking help!! that is a hard thing to do sometimes! hopefully you are being guided by a psychiatrist. i'm sure you were told, but to reiterate, do not stop taking if you aren't happy with the results, it is dangerous to just stop. you must ask your dr. to switch or tell them what isn't working. sometimes people are diagnosed wrong and the side affects present themselves that way. in other words, if you are diagnosed depressed and in reality you are bi-polar, this medication by itself could be deadly alone without a mood stabilizer. make sure to keep your appointments, and maybe a journal would help so after it's built a tolerance then you can address side affects if there are any. if this specific medication isn't for you, don't worry there is one out there, just keep trying. good job, and take good care of yourself!!! :flower3:

oh goodness, just saw how old this thread is... op hope you are doing well, please report!
