Experience with Pet Sitter?

I am interested in getting a pet sitter for my 2 dogs and DD's gerbils while we go to Oahu in October. I talked to the lady today and told me the price and asked questions about breeds and said a sitter in my area would call me soon to set up an interview before we go.
Now, this would be my first time doing this, usually I take them to a great boarding place that has day care, but it is alittle more expensive and I would have to take them the day before I go, as I have an really early flight and not be able to pick them up the night I get home because they would be closed. DM would be home, but she doesn't want the responsibility of doing it, but that is a whole different thread.

So, any experience with pet sitters? If so, what questions should I ask? I would be having them come once a day, as I have really big dog bowls and a 5 gallon water bowl. Thanks in advance.

No experience, but a question- don't your dogs have to pee more than once a day?

DM would be here to let the dogs in and out in their 6foot fenced in yard, and one of my dogs knows how to open the back door to let herself out. They would be outside most of the day playing, but DM doesn't want to do anything more than let them in or out, and she can't lift the 5 gallon water bottle if it is full.
