I just read the post about Pan Am and was wondering if anybody has ever used Air Tran before? have never heard of them before I went to travelocity for flights. We have booked for 6 of us out of Philadelphia for$158 RT. The closer the trip gets the more I worry about things like this. I am hoping to hear something good about them.

Thanks in advance
Candy

Air Tran is the former Valu Jet. They've been around for quite awhile and there is no comparison to Pan Am. No worries.

Actually everything I've read is that air tran --value jet are not the same airline...air tran BOUGHT value jets routes and some of there equipment which is different then just a change of name...

I have flown air tran out of philly because they have been the cheapest a number of times...but patients is needed when you fly air tran it can try you nerves at times...

AirTran was merged with Value Jet in 1999.

From http://airlines.afriqonline.com/airlines/434.htm

Air Tran Airways is a US domestic airline flying cut-price domestic scheduled flights using Boeing 737-200, DC-9 and Boeing 717 (MD-95) type airliners. The airline began operations using a small fleet of Boeing 737-200 jets out of Orlando.

July 1997 Air Tran merged with the ill-fated ValuJet, who had lost its good name after a fatal DC-9 accident. The ValuJet fleet of DC9-32 jets were repainted in Air Tran livery along with the Boeing 717s that were on order at the time of the merger.

FLEET: Douglas DC-9-32, Boeing 717, Boeing 737-200.

From http://airlines.afriqonline.com/airlines/433.htm

ValuJet began in June 1993 flying cut-price scheduled domestic routes initially out of Atlanta. Its first route was with a DC-9-32 jet to Tampa, Florida. A large fleet of aging Douglas DC9-32 jets were acquired as the route network quickly expanded to over 20 eastern US cities. ValuJet added other DC9 variants to its fleet as the routes expanded. DC9-20 and MD-80 jets were acquired and a launch order was placed for the new MD-95 (first flown as the Boeing 717 in mid 1999).

On 11 May 1996 a ValuJet DC9 crashed in the Florida everglades with all souls aboard lost and the Federal Aviation Administration took a closer look at the ValuJet operation resulting in its operating licence being revoked before the cause of the acccident had even been determined by the NTSB. This was mainly due to political pressure due to the adverse publicity that ValuJet was getting in the media.

ValuJet restarted limited operations that September after the FAA had required the airline to witdraw or scrap some of its older Douglas DC9s. The airline industry is very sensitive to poor public image, however unfair, and it was agreed that ValuJet should merge with the untainted Air Tran Airways and take the later's name and livery. This happenened during 1999 and the Boeing 717 jets were delivered in the new Air Tran livery.

Anything I have heard about AIr Tran has not been good. I know of someone who was supposed to land in Philly but they landed in Trenton NJ. Their car was at PHL so they insisted Air Tran pay for the taxi to get them back to the airport.

Another was for a scheduled flight back to PHL...they changed the flight to an earlier time and had no schedule flights until the following day...this was not out of Orlando but I believe Tampa.

Hopefully they have improved their service.

Actually, ValuJet bought AirTran and took AirTran's name. Yes, this is the airline that crashed in the Florida Everglades back in 1996, but I really don't hold that against them. Charges were filed against SabreTech, the company that supplied ValuJet with oxygen canisters. SabreTech mislabeled canisters as being empty when they were not and shipped them as cargo without taking appropriate precautions. This was ValuJet/AirTran's only fatality.

The change of name to AirTran was not particularly an attempt to hide from the bad press from this incident... it was more of a shift of focus. The name "ValuJet" made it sound like the Greyhound of the skies. They wanted to compete with Delta and pick up some of the business travelers that Delta had p***ed off one time too many. They have 64 jet aircraft in their fleet (20 - 30 times what PanAm has) including several new Boeing 717's. They have one of the youngest fleets of any U.S. carrier (far younger than, for instance, Northwest).

Yes, sometimes you have to have some patience when you're flying with them, but who hasn't encountered frustration when flying with the majors as well?

I have personally never had problems flying with them. I've flown AirTran several times since they are the second largest carrier at Atlanta... my hometown airport. Its definitely a more pleasant experience than flying Delta.

Check out their web site...

My DH was suppposed to fly out of Detroit to Atlanta on Air Tran. Flight was cancelled. Not Air Tran's fault though....oh, did I mention that the flight was on Sept 11, 2001 ?

True. But ValuJet had another serious accident prior to the Everglades crash.

An engine failed on a ValuJet DC-9 while on a runway at Atlanta Hartsfield Airport, June 8, 1995. Pieces of the engine and a stream of jet fuel penetrated the passenger compartment. The aircraft was destroyed by the fire within minutes. Fortunately, the accident occured on the ground, and most people escaped unharmed. According to the NTSC, "One flight attendant was seriously injured from shrapnel and the fire. Another flight attendant and six passengers received minor injuries. None of the other 55 people on board were injured." See http://www.ntsb.gov/Pressrel/1996/960730.htm

I was on a Delta Air Lines plane at Atlanta Hartsfield Airport that day, waiting to take off, and I saw the burned ValuJet right after it happened. It was scary, because there was no word at the time of whether everyone had been able to get out of the burning airplane.

True. And less than 13 months later, Delta had a similar incident at Pensacola, except this one was fatal. A Delta MD-88 (a descendent of the DC-9) was starting its takeoff roll at Pensacola when an engine disintegrated. Pieces of schrapnel penetrated the aircraft slicing through and killing two passengers.

This incident upset me much more because it was so similar to ValuJet's. What kind of security do I get from flying on a major airline if their maintenance staff doesn't detect parts about to fail and cause this kind of catastrophic incident, particularly when this kind of incident had happened to ValuJet just a year before?

This incident also upset me because I was flying Delta MD-88's every week at that time. I already hated sitting in those last few rows of seats behind the galley... between the two engines. After this incident, I'd take a later flight rather than be seated back there.

My DW and I have used Air Tran out of Illinois and have had good luck with the exception of being a little late at times
( but that happens to all of them ). I would have no problem using them again.

Non-stop flight from Newport News to Orlando.

New plane,

On time both ways,

Assigned seats,

Friendly flight crew,

Low low price,

All airlines should be so good!

Lou

I just used AirTran this Sept. and had no problems at all. The staff was very friendly and helpful at both BWI and MCO. On time both ways. The plane seats were a little snug but you get what you pay for, $98.00 pp round trip.

I am looking at Air Tran for our DCL vacation in May. I tried to book on line but apparently they haven't opened up the dates yet. Does anyone know when the dates for May will open? I want to compare them with Southwest who I'm also waiting for to open my dates. Are these two airlines pretty similar??

I fly probably 20 roundtrips a year, and about 50% of the time, it is on AirTran. I have never had problems with them, except that I have had a few late flights.

Last spring my father flew Air Tran from BWI to somewhere on the gulf coast of FL. He was to arrive in FL around 9pm. 3/4 of the way into the flight the pilot announced that the plane would be turning around and heading back to BWI (Baltimore) to pick up people that it had left behind!! No one could believe this! The pilot apologized and said the decision was out of his hands. My father arrived in FL around 2am!! Not a good experience. I am glad that Southwest is the "option" out of BWI. In fact, leaving in the morning for a long weekend in WDW!!

Words to the wise on using any airline: give yourself plenty of time to get to where you are going. ALL airlines experience delays (often not their fault). Connections add another level of excitment to the equation. I just flew AirTran MCO-ATL-LGA & back this past weekend & arrived into NY 15 minutes early! Left there a few minutes late (was about 7th in line for takeoff-not AirTran's fault), made my connection (but just by a few minutes-they were holding the plane). My other suggestion is to have travel insurance if anything is complicated (must cut it close, connections, few flights out of your airport, possibility for weather delays etc.)or you can't afford to lose $.

my aunt flies Air Tran all the time, she says that sometimes the seats in the back can be noisy, but that she likes them.
