Expensive Food Trend

Has anyone else heard Geogre Lopez talk about sharing a churro a Dl ......lick it and pass it........when the sugar is gone his grandma flipped it over and kept passing:rotfl2:

haha! that is one of my favorite bits!!!

There are lots of ways to not spend a fortune on meals at DL. We always take our own water in and refill it at Rancho Del Zocaro or at the first aid station, they don't mind that at all. We have taken snacks but not regularly. We share things like churros, Dole Whips and popcorn but we each get our own ice cream sandwiches. :) DBF and I will share a meal when we feel like it, Rancho has GREAT enchiladas and if you get them with a dessert and chips it will feed 25 people with no problem. We love RFC but I am a member of MyPoints and I earn gift cards from them quite often!! We are also a member of the RFC members club, so we get a free appetizer and at least $25 off our meal from the gift card AND we share there as well so it's more affordable. You just have to be savvy about it and it's not that bad.

We have also taken microwave meals and simply walked back to our room when we get hungry. Get hungry, walk to the hotel/motel, make sandwiches or microwave something and eat. Relax, go back to the parks recharged. It's not that hard if you're in a hotel on Harbor.

Our first trip in 2006 we spent way too much on meals....and the BB was closed then so we didn't get to experience that until 2007! LOL

I never even thought about taking Dum Dums with us! That's not a bad idea. :thumbsup2

Ugh, Dum Dums. Evil evil Dum Dums. That was the exact food product that smacked me over the head to get me to realize that my boy can't have anything related to corn syrup. Nothing like being attacked by a crazed 3 year old, not 20 minutes after he eats his first Dum Dum!

Are Chupa Chups avail in the US? In Australia, England, and Japan they're made with sugar, not corn syrup. Look very similar.

We can get them once in awhile here in the North West. More so during the rein of the Spice Girls. It was Baby Spices lollipop! But every once in a while I see them!!

for chupa chups any mexican grocery store(typically lil' stores) will carry chupas, we have 3 of these types of stores here and they all carry them and my kids have been eating these since they were lil' ones (they r 15 and 16 now) and as much as i love dumdums chupas have a way better taste!!!

Sigh.

(please note that my brother and I enjoyed them as children, but until they decide to go to a sugar-only, no corn syrup, recipe, we will have to forgot the relative pleasure, sniffle sniffle)

Have you tried the organic lolly pops from Trader Joes? No corn syrup, or artificial anything.:)

Chupa Chups should be available in Anaheim. Check the 7-11's in the area. I haven't seen the suckers at TJ's....hmmmm, I'll have to do that. :) I think for this trip I'll have leftover Tootsie Pops from Easter, so we will take those too. :)

I agree that the costs are rising, my DH swears that he can 'trend' the receipts of our last several trips and see a 3-4% increase a year; that is pretty signifigant!

I agree that the cost is too high for what you get, but at the same time, if we are in DL, we are happy. The certain places we eat and the snacks are part of the memories and traditions. When it comes to budgeting these trips, every family has to decide what matters most to them. Some people need a great pool at the hotel, some need a shuttle, while our priority is to enter the park when it opens and leave when it closes!! This makes it necessary to consume our meals in the park, so we have just adjusted the needs of our family.

We eat fresh fruit and milk or yogurt for breakfast at the hotel. When we return at night, we try to eat some fresh veggies or a salad. These are healthy items that keep everyone full and also re-fuel energy levels.

I always hit COSTCO before we go, and stock up on snacks. I pack Ziplock bags with snacks, (granola bars, raisins, fruit leathers, gum) for each day we will be in the park, before we leave home. Then we just grab one and toss it into the backpack when we leave the hotel. We snack on these items during the day, and when it is meal time, no one (except for my oldest DS, but he has hollow leg syndrome!!!) is 'starving,' so we split meals. We do not like to ride the rides with overly full stomachs, so it is pretty easy to order small portions and split them.

The big thing for us is the drinks. We freeze water bottles the night before, put two in the bottom pocket of our backpack with two cool ones and a couple cans of soda. The frozen ones keep the other drinks cold for the first part of the day, and by the end of the day, they are melted and ready to drink. We NEVER pay for drinks in the park, unless it is Christmas time and we need an eggnog and peppermint mocha fix!! :thumbsup2

Exactly! The prices are higher than offsite but I'm willing to pay a bit more for a meal that allows me to get right back to rides ASAP (which I'm sure DLR plans on). I'm expecting our food expenses to be higher this trip now that DD is 6.5 and eating a lot more than she did when she was 4 (our last DLR trip). I'm definitely planning to pack snacks from home to take into the park to tide her over between meals along with water to drink. I'm sure we'll get a churro or two and Mickey bars but hopefully we can keep our food money mostly for meals.

They are perfect for long lines and easy to share with other kids who are bored in line and whose parents approve of course ;) :thumbsup2

Well, I just had to go to Target today and get some, so I am ready for our upcoming trip! :thumbsup2 :cool1:

I like the Dum Dum concept. Do they have them at Costco?

Prices steadily rise at DLR every year if not every few months. Sometimes I splurge and sometimes I don't get much of anything. I just take it in stride and when I just gotta have me a bag of sour apple balls for POT and HM or a frozen banana for the Mark Twain riverboat... I just go for it.

AM-PM off the freeway is a decent alternative if you remember. Nothing special there, very ordinary but compared to everything inside it's a 'last chance' spot.

They should have them. Sam's Club does so I am guessing Costco would. They are cheap! :teeth:

Hopefully they don't come in bags of 500 . . .

 That's a bit much for me!! LOL I got a pretty big bag at Target for two bucks that should work nicely. ;)

But you know, I just had this totally hilarious image pop up of half the park walking around or waiting in line with Dum Dums in their mouths. :lmao: :lmao:

It could be fun to bring a 500 bag and just give them out to everyone in the que lines. It would lift spirits and make for some fun stories I'm sure.

I have a silly story from our last DL trip regarding the food.

My dh pirate: was trying to cut Back on food every time I would mention food he would say we will get something when we leave, then we wouldn't!!

So, since we had extra money, :hippie: I was buying extra souvenirs with the extra dollars. Or I would go buy food while he was in the Tortilla Factory or on Space Mountain.

When we got home and only had half of what he thought he saved he was confused and thought dire things had happened to the money. I had to reasure him that I was buying park food and extra souvenirs.

Truely I didn't realize that was why he wouldn't let us eat. Then we had a talk about being on the same page regarding saving money.

But is was Disney
