Someone posted a site to get a program that showed exif data of a picture by right clicking on it a little bit ago. I downloaded it and it was great, but I had to format my computer and lost it.

Who ever it was, could you repost the link.

thanks

Thank you kind sir... I really liked the feature and was bummed when I realized I hadn't backed it up before I hit the format button. You always lose something no matter how hard you try it seams.

Kyle,

Is this another one of those good software programs that is better because it doesn't make registry changes? ;)

Jeff

I didn't realize that this was for right-clicking pictures on a web site - that is kind of neat.

However, that the Firefox extension makes you install the IE one first makes me very nervous! Especially in the "don't fiddle with the registry" department. :)

A little digging finds one called FxIF that is a Firefox extension that doesn't require anything else to be installed. It shows them if you right-click an image and click Properties.

There's also iExif that is a Firefox extension, but it also needs a separate program installed first.

I never use IE so I don't want any IE junk installed if I can avoid it. :thumbsup2

Since no reboot was requrired, that would tell me that no registry was changed. It is plug in.

It is a plug in. Download it, then click install. Takes all of 5 seconds. You can then customize it to show what info you want shown. One thing I have noticed when using it is that it doesn't always show ISO info. Which is weird. No reboot required for it to work and it takes up I belive about 750k on the computer.

Don't know anything about the Firefox version. But on IE it is a very cool toy.

I must be slow this morning. I installed the program, but I don't think it's working for me. What is the "IE popmenu"? I assumed it was what you get when right clicking on a picture. When I right click I don't see the option "View EXIF".

Thanks

Never mind - hadn't fully installed it after all.

Actually it does have something to do with it. A change to the registry that must be active, requires the system to reboot. you can not change the active registry on the fly and have it work. At least that is my understanding.

When the computer boots, it loads the registry up..... and it is done it can't be actively changed without rebooting to load it up again.

Sorry, that's not the way it works. :) Nearly every program changes the registry. (Just check out HKLM\Software or HKCU\Software for a zillion examples.) The changes are all immediate - otherwise something like changing a preference in Word or your screen saver would require a reboot. What requires reboots are either changes to low-level services like networking (although some of those can be done without reboots, certainly 2000 and XP are much better than 9x in this regard) or new services, etc. (That's why some newer games require a reboot near the beginning, because they install a low-level copy-protection service like StarForce.) Hopefully someday Windows will be able to unload and restart everything so that it never requires a reboot, like Unix does - don't count on Vista to be that way. (I've been beta-testing it for a while now, and you still have to do a bit of rebooting.)

Some programs will also tell you that they need rebooting when they really don't - these are often ones that put something in the startup that you don't really need. I rarely reboot when a program indicates that I need to and it's pretty rare that it really needed one.

We're getting a bit off topic though. ;) Did I mention that everyone should be using Firefox? :thumbsup2 :cool1:

I'm with Groucho on this, except the bit about Firefox. You should use Opera instead. It shows EXIF without any plugin needed.

I think we can safely agree on "anything but Internet Explorer." :teeth:

If Opera had an ad-blocking feature, I might use it. I am a big fan of AdBlock. No more web ads! (Long ago, I used the Junkbusters proxy... my battle against web ads has been going on for quite a while.)
