Exercising twice in a day question.

My friend wants me to work out with her at our gym. Thats great and all, but she doesn't want to do as much as I do, and I end up leaving with her after only 30 minutes on a machine. So my thought for tomorrow is to go at my normal time of 5.30am and do what I usually do, and then go with her at 8.45am and do the little work out. My husband is convinced that I will hurt myself doing this... I don't think so.

Any thoughts?

Will you be doing weights or cardio? Running twice in the same day is a common training plan for endurance sports. The runs are usually seperated by more then 3 hours though (morning and evening for example).

If you are talking about weights I think you will be ok as long as you don't try and work the same body part. I would also make sure not to cool off too much between the workouts.

I think a better plan would be to get to the gym a bit earlier then your friend and just have her join you for the last 30 minutes of your workout. You could also just stick around and finish when she is done and let her just leave by herself. You don't have to arrive and leave together.

Thanks for the imput. I can't get there before her because I have to drop my little ones off at school. I think what I may do is just stay longer. She can leave if she wants... I just don't want to be rude, or make her feel bad or embarassed because I'm able to work out more than her. I'm sure that sounds silly though, right?

ETA - I don't lift, just do a few different ellipticals. Can't run anymore because of my knee.

I am thinking about this myself.

I am thinking of doing JAZZERCISE in the morning. A studio has opened near me. I want to try it and see what its like and they are having some great specials.

Every evening my DH & I hit the gym and I do 45 mins on the elliptical and then some weights.

I am thinking of keeping my evening gym routine with DH but adding Jazzercise in the a.m.

Truthfully, OP, I don't think that will work for you. When I am done with my 45 minute elliptical; I work out pretty intensely (level 13) and I am soaking wet when I am done and screaming for a shower. Are you going to leave, take a shower and go back and w/o and leave and take another shower? :confused3

Well, I guess I was just planning on going home, getting the kids ready, changing into another set of workout clothes, and then going back again. I mean, I may be a little stinkie, but no worse than the rest of the world who exercises! Other than that one guy who reaked of vodka next to me. To this day, I still don't know what that was all about....

I work out with someone who always stays longer than I do, and I don't think it's a big deal at all. On occasion I do stay longer than she does and it's never been an issue.

Sometimes one of us will workout longer to talk to the other, but usually one of us says "I have to go" and the other will say "I'm going to stay and do XYZ"
I highly recommend it! :)

I seriously wouldn't worry about it, OP. Just do 30 minutes with her, and stay and do whatever else you're doing.

It's a little silly to go twice just for that reason :goodvibes

I think you should plan to try it out.

Its not about being stinky at all ... for me I w/o intensely and then when I am done, I get reallly chilled and head right for the shower to bring my temp back to normal. ::yes::

Exercise is a personal thing and I never like to do it with others because I don't want to be limited or extended to their criteria.

I agree with Firedancer about the cardio v weights. Cardio can be done several times a day, lifting requires the muscle to relax after breaking down. As long as you do the cardio according to your target heart rate (or for 20 mins or more) you should be fine.

Funny story....one time I decided to stay and do two workouts. My first one was a high intensity bench aerobic workout, and the class that immediately followed was a muscle targeting class that used hand held weights. I had been doing the bench workout for many months and felt strong enough to add the other class since it was more of a muscle targeting class. Boy was I wrong.....I did both classes and felt some what weak during the second one, but I was able to keep up and do what was asked. Later that night, I felt very heavy and sore. The next morning, my arms and chest area were very swollen....so swollen I looked like I was a body builder in the upper area. It freaked me out a little, but I knew it was due to too much stress in one evening.

I don't know if it's as effective for others as it is for me, but I tend to HAVE to go twice in a day, in order to get everything in that I want to do, because I just don't have a large enough block of time to do it all. So, I go once in the AM before work, and once in the PM after work; luckily the gym is almost spittin' distance from work, so it's not any huge drain on gas. I haven't had any problems with hurting myself; I do weight training in the AM for about an hour, then some pretty intense cardio (elliptical usually) for 40-45 minutes in the PM. So far it's worked out well for me, especially if my daughter decides to join me; she HATES to be there longer than she absolutely HAS to be, lol.

Thats how I'd split it too-do eliptic earlier-then lift weights and other machines with your friend-that way you can do the same routine-she just does lighter weights :)

I often go to the gym early in the morning, and then after work, so its not an issue of going twice in a day really, its more of an issue because its so close together. I will have about 2 hours in between going.
Also, I don't lift weights. I've tried it, and I don't really like it. I have a very bum sholder from years of sports, so anything over my head KILLS me. My husband made me do this one exercise with a weight where I held it with both hands, put it over and behind my head, and went up and down. 3 times, 10 times each. It took me about a full week to recover my sholders and elbows from that!!!
