Hi everyone - I'm hope to get advice on exercising. I was in a car accident 2 yrs ago this July - I still suffer from neck and back pain so as a result I have been afraid to exercise. Not sure if I sould be trying something. Starting slow....any suggestions??

I think swimming is suppossed to be great for people with neck and back injuries. You might want to ask a physical therapist or a doctor for some advice. I also do T-Tapp and she talks about her exercise being good for people with back injuries. More info on T-Tapp at her website. Good luck.

My thoughts would be to seek advice of physical therapist.

When you do pool work, be careful. Sometimes I can feel that I have done something maybe more than my body was ready to do. Start out there with some basic exercising as opposed to doing the crawl stroke or such.

I was doing some research on exercises that help the back on the Internet. There are some good suggestions to begin your movement. You might want to Google that. Most information was repeated so pick what you can do to start.

I would higly recommend to begin with core strengthening as in Pilates, but not all of those exercises at one time. Build up to it. I do Winsor Pilates and the dvd gives an example of someone doing the exercises who cannot perform fully due to that sort of issue. Until you have strengthened you core you should be careful on what you add. Also do go slowly. It will take a good deal of time to get your body into any form to do continuous exercising.

Good luck and Congratulations that you feel well enough to begin moving in a healthy way!

I suggest a physical therapist.

I have a neck injury from 1994.....and sacral issues that I was in PT for that got exacerbated with a rear ending about 5-6 weeks ago.

If you have never had PT...you might very well have limited range of motion. If you had chiro--that probably helped with the range...but PT will help more and also get your stronger.

Your clue that your body might need help:

1. Are you in pain when you wake up
2. do you get regular headaches
3. does any aches/pains/stiffness worsen or improve with movement
4. can you turn your head and look across your shoulder (never knew I was limited range of motion until it was measured and then increased with PT)
5. can you bend and touch your toes as much as you could before the accident?
6. can you bend backwards (not a back bend...but until PT...didn't know that my inability to bend backwards could be fixed somewhat).

I agree with Lily about the Pilates....BUT Without PT...I couldn't even do beginner beginner stuff--I was a weakling! If you are weak now---it may not help to start Pilates without PT help--b/c you could end up doing it wrong--my body is proof of that. No matter how hard it tried to do things correctly--it just couldn't b/c muscles were weaker than weak.

I recommend PT all the way!!!
